Alright lads n lasses.

I go to Riviera Maya next week and want to have at least 1 good day trip whilst we are there.

Has anyone been and can recommend any really good ones? Chichen Itza is the obvious one. Also, is it best to book these whilst we are there rather than in advance.

Cheers for any advice.

Only been to Mexico once and stayed in Tulum. We decided against the day trip to Chichen Itza due to how long we would take to get there and back and the fact we would be there at the hottest part of the day.
There is a smaller Mayan ruins site in Tulum itself and so we just went there. No doubt Chichen Itza is the better place to go but depending on where you are in relation to it there may be better options to see some Mayan ruins.

...been to Mexico a few times and really enjoyed it, but I tend to choose a smart hotel and stay in it.

We are staying in a 5 star adult only hotel mate rated #1 in the region, but I want at least 1 day out whilst we are there.

Why would you go all that way just to stay in the hotel?
Having done it myself - because you’ve got everything you need in the hotel itself. When I was there last year there was plenty of trails to walk about on, spa etc. but sun, food and booze was pretty much all I wanted. Could easily spent an hour in a jacuzzi lost in my own thoughts, watch movies in my room with a beer. Don’t have to be constantly checking times for activities etc.

Going back next year myself. May head into playa del carmen, May not.

Guess it depends what you want froma holiday. I'm much more get an Airbnb (don't really like hotels) and be out in the city/area from 8am until midnight. Local food, drink etc. Especially somewhere like Mexico.
