Mexico Atlas

Mexico has a rolling three-year performance table for relegation, and the bottom team usually goes down. For now relegation has been replaced with the bottom three teams paying hefty fines to fund the rebuilt second division.

Atlas was second from bottom at the end of last season’s performance table and had to pay up MX$70 million. It’s only about 2.5 million pounds, but it’s almost 10% of their club’s value.

(Also Atlas scraped through the first two rounds of the Apertura tournament. Both finished 1-1 on aggregate and they advanced because they were the higher seed. Honestly, an even worse tiebreaker than penalties.)
