Messi was targeted by Arsenal when he was a youngster but he refused to leave (instead they got Fabregas).

Maradona almost played for Sheffield United when he was 18 but the club wasn't willing to pay his transfer price, such a vision lol

Not on the same scale, but I love the fact that Blackburn were all set to sign Lewandowski and then that Icelandic volcano went off and all flights were grounded and he chose to sign for someone else!

Arsene Wenger tried to get Zlatan as a youngster but wanted him to come for a trial. 'Zlatan does not do trials'

C.Ronaldo was also close to being a Gunner if I remember correctly.
