Since Pienaar went into decline/left I'd say he was bang average at best.
His England career tells the biggest story as far as I'm concerned. Just didn't have the tools for the job. When away from his comfort blanket and he was on his own at international level he was quite rightly the subject of a lot of criticism from the media. It wasn't just some southern bias at wanting their own clubs' LB in there. His time with England was pretty abject. And the same goes for Jagielka too. Completely stepping out of their class.
