Been linked with Mellberg. According to the Mirror he isn't signing a new contract at Olympiacos and he wants a return to the Premier League.

Sweden veteran Olof Mellberg is a target for Everton after contract talks with Olympiacos broke down, writes John Cross.
The former Aston Villa defender is now set to leave the Greek club and wants one last move at club level after retiring from international football following Sweden's Euro 2012 exit.
The 34-year-old, who scored against England at the Euros, is keen on a return to the Premier League, where he spent seven years with Villa.

Wouldn't mind getting him tbh but his age is an issue since we won't get much years out of him but in the Euros he has proved that he is still a class defender. If this story is true then you have to ask does that mean either Heitinga, Jags or Distin is on their way out of the club. If we keep those three and end up bringing him in then it could be good for the youngsters to learn from his experiences and we would have 4 experienced CB's and all capable of playing at a high level.

Why on earth would we want to buy a 34 year old defender.

I agree but like I said it could be that Heitinga or Jagielka could be on their way out or even Baines could be leaving so worse case scenario Distin is pushed to left back. Which would mean their was space for a CB if we manage to sell Yobo.

If we sold Baines and Yobo without replacing them with a quality defender and then put Distin at left back i would never set foot in Goodison again.

Haha yeah it would be stupid for us to do that but like I said it could be a worse case scenario. I hope it doesn't lead to that but Mellberg would be an okay signing even if it was a back up role, we brought Distin at an old age and look how well he has turned out. Mellberg could be a similar signing if the rumor is true.

i think hes gone downhill since he did the film The Road

1 -- If Yobo goes + Duffy goes on loan we are left with 3 centre backs -- always nice to have experienced cover on a free.

2 -- If either of Heitinga / Jagielka are sold then we have 3 + Duffy and a transfer budget.

Zat lad this isn't a maths lesson.

He's old but mer. If he was free and on lowish wages I'd have him.
