Media Narrative

Sona

Player Valuation: £8m
I’m not usually one for the whole media conspiracy theories, but yesterday really grated on me.

Spending
I’ve written this in the matchday thread, but look at the gulf in spending across the two starting elevens yesterday:

Pickford £30m - Allison £67m

O’Brien £17m - Bradley [Free]

Mykolenko £18m - Kerkez £40m

Tarkowski [Free] - Van Dijk £75m

Keane £25m - Konate £36m

Gueye £2m - Szoboszlai £60m

Garner £15m - Mac Allister £35m

Dewsbury-Hall £28m - Gravenberch £34m

Ndiaye £17m - Salah £37m

Grealish [Loan] - Gakpo £45m

Beto £26m - Ekitike £79m

That’s without two £100m+ players and a £30m RB on the bench.

However, the only time fees were mentioned was when Barry (“Their £27m summer signing from Villarreal”) and Dibling (“The £35m man from Southampton”) came on.

They did mention Isak as “the most expensive signing in Premier League history” but no mention of the price tag, nor the fact that he was replacing a £79m striker!

There should at least be a nod to the disparity between the financial cost of the two teams, but this wasn’t even on the radar of the media.

Shots on Goal
Everton were lambasted by Jim Beglin for not getting out and getting shots on goal in the first half. “Only one team have turned up to win the game” etc.

But when the shoe was on the other foot in the second half and Everton literally got to a point where a stat flashed up saying:

Liverpool
Shots 8
On Target 2

Everton
Shots 7
On Target 2

..his comment was along the lines of “At last, Everton showing something, but still not anywhere near what Liverpool have done” or words to that effect. They were within one shot of each other!

Intent
Throughout the game there was almost blame attributed to Everton for not leaving space in behind for Liverpool to exploit; criticised for trying to maintain good defensive structure. Again no mention of the context around how much money one team cost versus the other.

Decisions
Beglin suggested that Grealish “likes to go down easily”!when he was continuously being taken out by Bradley. I counted 5 fouls in the end from Bradley on Grealish, but no suggestion from the commentary team of a yellow card.

The time added on was also a joke, and again no mention of this. Can you imagine had it been the other way around?

They really are media darlings and yesterday was the worst I’ve ever seen it.

Only one team did show up to win the game, and we should be really frustrated that it took us going down two goals to try to compete when once we did do so we showed we were more than capable of doing it. Sadly Beglin is right.

Every single one of their starting eleven (excluding Bradley as an academy product) were more expensive than our most expensive starter (Pickford at £30m).

That is crazy.

Since the start of the 2022/23 season, only three other matches have seen fewer than four minutes added on in the second half.
