Amberleigh House, Neptune Collanges, L'Escargot, Red Rum, Seagram, Red Marauder, Ben Nevis And Adalante, just off the top of my head have been more 11 or older. In fact the last 4 winners have been 10 (Seabass' age) or older. Older horses thrive in the race. They settle better and experienced jumpers are crucial for the race. Which is why the other favourite, on his own, didn't stand a chance. I agree with the rest of what you say though. Seabass had no chance with te weight and punters and media a bookies all got a bit carried away because of the woman factor. Saying that, that winner was bloody farcacle, connectionskept it's rating low to steal a march on a handicapper. Now, like every other National winner for the last 10 years, he'll never win another race.

why the grand national will never see the best horses race in it and remains a lottery. probably not enough races over 4m over the calendar year.

You're right, a well handicapped half decent stayer with a bit of fight will win the national, a classy horse will win the Gold Cup, the complete package. The whole nature of Handicaps don't attract top horses but even then, the Hennessy is a better Handicap. Imperial commander is well passed his best. From the position he settled, if he would have been 3 years younger he would have pissed up with over 12 stone on his back against that lot. Never mind 11 stone 6. Still, it remains a great spectacle but until you get actual classy horses at their peak, running in the race again. You won't get horses winning races after they've won, or performed well. The best this lot can hope to achieve is in the handicaps and when they've won this race they aren't good enough to win with a big weight.
