meat, cheese or beer? one has to go

Cheese, don't drink a lot of beer but enjoy it more than cheese. Meat I need!

Most definitely cheese for me. As I consider myself a carnivore rather than an alcoholic, meat would be the last to go.

I think this is a key difference between British and European culture. Massive generalising here, but the European sees Beer as a pleasurably-heavy unique drink, which he might have once an evening as a neat bookend to a working day. The Brit sees it merely as the most common alcoholic drink to get drunk on, and were it not to exist, there would be plenty of other alcoholic drinks to get drunk on too.

The Campaign For Real Ale crowd are more in line with the Europeans, I think that might be older people in general.

The restricted licencing-hours laws of Britain, forcing drinkers to down their pints before 11pm, may be a root cause of this difference in attitude towards beer.

Sounds like you get it. You drink beer for pleasure, not to get drunk (tho' getting a bit drunk is a fun side-effect, it's not the main reason one drinks a few good beers).
