I think in defence of Villa fans, who have been widely criticised, I don't think they immediately disliked him because he was ex-blues but because he has a reputation for playing dire football and had just managed a team who were relegated.

No doubt McLeish, Ferguson et al. will be able to spin it that Villa were shoite this season because of the fans and not because McLeish is poor manager.

I think he's second rate, but when a club has a manager who's so unpopular with the fans it's the easist thing in the world for players to clock off. They wouldn't want to be relegated, I'm not saying that, but they wouldn't be pressured into giving their all.
