Wayne Rooney is one of six players reportedly set to be rested by England boss Roy Hodgson for their final group game against Slovakia on Monday.

Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Raheem Sterling, Kyle Walker and Danny Rose are also expected to be named on the bench.

Daniel Sturridge, Jamie Vardy, Jordan Henderson, Jack Wilshere, Nathaniel Clyne and Ryan Bertrand are in line to start as England aim to top Group B.

Slovakia could be unchanged following their win over Russia.

But they have six players on yellow cards, including Martin Skrtel, and another booking would see them banned from a potential last-16 match.

England need a point to be certain of a place in the last 16, while a win would mean they top the group.

In that event they would meet a third-placed side in the last 16, with that match set to take place on Saturday at the Parc des Princes in Paris, 34 miles from their Chantilly base.

"The important thing is to be in the last 16," Hodgson said. "We would like to win the group. If that means Paris, that's good, but all the venues are fine, so we don't want to win the group necessarily because it's Paris and it's a little bit closer to our base camp.

"We really want to win the group because it means we'll play against a third-placed team rather than playing a second- or first-placed team.

"Our motivation to win is there for all to see."

Victories for England and Slovakia in their second group game have put both nations on course for qualification.

Rooney, then aged 24, scored twice in a 4-0 friendly win the last time the sides met in March 2009.

Now playing in central midfield, Rooney is arguably enjoying his most influential display at a major finals since he burst on to the international scene with four goals at Euro 2004.

If Rooney, England's record goalscorer, features in Saint-Etienne he will equal Steven Gerrard's total of 114 caps - the third-highest by an England player. He will be one behind David Beckham, who holds the record for an outfield player.

If this is true I genuinely despair. Let's rest them all, draw tonight and end up facing a much tougher side in the R16 at he weekend. At least our players will feel fresh when they trudge off crestfallen yet again and head to the airport.

The stupid old tit.

Did you see the quotes from Greg Dyke? All he has to do is lose on penalties to someone half decent and he gets a contract renewal, he's taking the Micky out of you all.

Not out of me any more - I'm only renewing my membership this time because we've got the savages in WC qualifying and I simply can't miss Hampden next June. I'll go to Slovakia away in September and that's it for me, save for the very odd trip where I fancy a few days away. Been going away (and, to a lesser extent, home) with England since 89 and have had enough.

Time to use my annual leave going on far more interesting trips and not surrounded by absolute trumpets. Or watching dog sh1t football.

It's a squad game, and with all respect to Slovakia, the players we're putting out should be good enough to get a win tonight. Lets face it, Kane and Sterling were possibilities to be dropped anyway, Deli Alli and Rooney out of the side might mean a run-out for Ross, although he does seem down the pecking order. I'm not worried at all.

If Sturridge plays from the start I'm going to watching him closely as to how much running he can muster when he doesn't have the ball. Judging from the Wales game, not much, his legs looked shot for any serious attempt at a sprint or prolonged attempt at closing down, tracking back etc. At one point he did try to chase after a loose ball and gave up after a few yards!
