Police in Spain have arrested current and former footballers as well as club executives as part of an investigation into match-fixing.

Current and former players as well as club executives - reportedly from the country's first and second divisions - have been detained.

"The police action follows complaints about possible match-fixing in a May 2018 match from La Liga to the Spanish authorities," said a La Liga spokesman.

Is it just me or is football the only sport in the world where everything seems a bit lax on match fixing, drug testing and anti doping?

Not sure it is lax, just that there’s so much money swirling around that no one dares blow the whistle.

Doping especially I’m convinced is widespread especially in the premier league. The physical levels teams are reaching now is ridiculous.

The standard of officiating, opposition to VAR by certain clubs, the goalkeeping ‘errors’ from certain keepers in certain games (not including Pickford in this), the blatant fixing of the league cup semi final draws, I think it’s absolutely rife but no one seems to care.

Everyone is getting rich so the clubs down the chain (including Everton) don’t care as they have accepted no longer being competitive as they’re all now very rich. There’s competition everywhere (controlled between the teams the establishment want to compete but nevertheless there’s a good scrap between the selects few each season). Moronic fans continue to lap it up ‘let me renew my sky subscription and put some more more money straight into LFC/United’s pockets. The bookmakers are making money under over fist on it also. Why should anyone blow the whistle on it when every single person in the chain is perfectly happy with what’s going on apart from a few irate fans of about 4 clubs in each division of the top leagues in Europe who are too good to go down but are locked out of the CL places. If you’re above or below that line then you don’t care.

Very true, I remember some Spanish doctor was going to blow the lid on the doping in football but that al mysteriously died a death.

I’m already starting to lose interest in football due to the reasons you’ve stated above and I can’t see a change any time soon.

If you don't fix the matches, you can't afford the dope. If you don't dope, you aren't in a position to fix the matches. Catch 22.

I was massively disillusioned at our league cup semi final under Martinez. City Liverpool Stoke and us. Every man and his dog knew what way the draw would go before it came out and so it proved with City and Liverpool split both with the second legs at home. What followed in both semi finals was some ridiculous officiating to ensure that they got the final they wanted. Could have easily been a Stoke Everton final, but millions of global betting punters probably aren’t arsed about a game like that. Southampton got screwed over a couple of years ago after seeing off Liverpool in the semi (again second leg at Anfield and ridiculous refereeing throughout) they then got shafted against United in the final.

In terms of doping I’ve seen James Milner go from being absolutely finished at City to looking fitter now than he did at any point in his career. The two Silvas, despite their lack of pace or physicality can press like Kante can as can Fernandinho who looked shot under Pellegrini. It’s also starting to become more frequent now that any new signing into these top clubs are taking 6 months/a season to get up to speed before absolutely exploding the season after.

Bernardo Silva barely used in first season. Fabinho disappeared for half a season the returned a monster in midfield, Keita no doubt will be more in tune with ‘the Liverpool way’ next season. Mahrez has taken a year despite being proven in the prem. Moura barely played for Spurs in his first season and is now key.

It’s just very very odd, not to mention that these top teams are now running further than ever rotating less and less yet just don’t seem to pick up anything like the injuries everyone else does. Some teams came off going deep in the CL last season, a World Cup in the summer, then a long season of games in every comp and barely have muscle injuries to show for it despite not much rotation.

Unbelievable.

I have no doubt Liverpool are doping, but I don't say that as a criticism - if they can get away with it, go for it. There will be plenty of other clubs in the league where it will be institutional.

Football obviously has ridiculously lax standards on doping (in the history of the Premier League, I believe only Abel Xavier has ever been done for doping - which is stretching credibility to a ridiculous degree) so take advantage of it.

As for match fixing, I'd say the Spain one now is the tip of the iceberg, but that iceberg would be the size of a continent. I've said it many times over the years - there's simply been too many incidents which go beyond referee incompetence or individual mistakes.

Still have no idea how it was justified a competition of one-leg ties SOMEHOW goes to 2 legs in the semi-finals and everyone's ok with that. Totally diminishes a cup that most people scoff at yet, in a one legged tie, I fancy us to EVENTUALLY win that.

Clubs are doping for sure, there are some very creative doctors out there and Barca have long been rumoured to be up to it. Guardiola definitely has the contacts from there and the evidence you provide above is pretty irrefutable.

After seeing Mike Dean’s performance in the City-Leicester game the other week, I would suggest the English game needs investigating too.
