Syria is in civil war, there are daily attacks killing tens of christians each day in north nigeria by islamic militants, there is daily rape and torture in somalia, india has started testing ballistic missles, the palestinian people continue to live under oppression, the UK troops are fighting the taliban in afghanistan,

and 9 deaths in the USA make the main news headline?

It sickens me that 9 deaths in the USA in a country that legalises guns, is bigger news than the thousands around the world who are being persecuted, violated and victimised.

An american life is worth more than an african life.

Come on mate. We all know america is pefectly safe on the whole. The murder rate is about 1 in 25,000 per year which isn't exactly huge. Most people will probably go their whole lives without even knowing a murder victim.

But it's about 1 in 100,000 in uk, australia, new zealand and ireland. Which means you're about four times more likely to be killed in your country then most of ours, now that doesn't make it a lawless hell hole by any means but it's still slightly shocking to us.

I don't know about Ireland, mate - a few years ago you'd never hear of a murder, once in a blue moon - now its rather all too frequent. Statiscally wise we're a lot further ahead than the UK for gun related crime and stabbings. Only last week a young lad was stabbed to death; this is almost weekly over here.

This country used to be incredibly safe, but alas no more. We have lost 50% of our police force through IMF cutbacks and many senior detectives are taking early retirement for pay related incentives, and they are not being replaced.

Since the start of the new century life is no longer as good - there is a lack of respect out there for one's fellow man, and life sadly has now become cheap.

It's easier for a criminal to target an unarmed person..

Criminals will get a hold of guns no matter how strict gun laws are..
Law abiding citizens should have no trouble going through the proper channels in order to arm themselves against threats.

It's statistically proven that a houseowner with a gun is more likely to be shot by an intruding criminal then one without, often by the criminal using his own gun against him.

If you have two armed people confronting each other, one of which is a hardened criminal and the other of which doesn't know how to use a gun it only ends one way. It's not just a matter of owning a gun but being trained to use it in pressure situations. there's literally hundreds of case of frightened civilians with guns being shot by their own weapons or shooting a family member by mistake when aiming at an attacker.

I would utilize the art of fighting without fighting - run away in other words.

This is where the argument becomes flawed in my opinion. The more guns readily available to the public surely makes it so much easier for criminals to acquire them ?

Guns are readily available everywhere, just have to look.

If someone breaks into your house in America, threatens to kill you and/or family, and you take the initiative and shoot him, will you go to prison?

No, it's legal to blow the intruder's brains all over your wall.. After all, it's "your" wall, right?

You could stab your eye out with a fork if you accelerate towards your mouth to fast. Just saying.

Seriously though every gun owner "I" know shoots frequently and has taking various safety courses etc.. Most of my friends are prior military mind you.. A common street thug wouldn't stand a chance in their house.
