Wayne Rooney will play his boyhood team Everton in his Manchester United testimonial at Old Trafford on August 3.

The United forward, who started his career at Goodison Park, had to persuade Everton manager Roberto Martinez to agree to the fixture just a week before the start of the next Premier League season.

Martinez was initially reluctant to play United just seven days before the 2016-17 season kicks off, but the Everton boss has been persuaded to take his team to Old Trafford for Rooney.

It is believed final negotiations took place with Everton yesterday and Martinez gave the go-ahead for the fixture after discussions with senior board members.

All the profits from the fixture, which is expected to be televised and will most likely be a sell-out, will go to four designated charities chosen by Rooney.

Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, the Claire House Hospice, Manchester United Football Club Foundation and the NSPCC will all benefit.

Rooney, who just under £300,000 a week from United alone, told United and his former club Everton from the very outset that he wanted every penny raised to go to charities.

Everton will take a full strength team to Old Trafford and there is no agreement for their former player to pull on the famous blue jersey at any stage of the game.

Rooney’s relationship with Everton supporters has improved in recent times and he wore the strip again when he agreed to turn out in Duncan Ferguson’s testimonial at Goodison Park at the start of he season.

The United forward, who has moved to Old Trafford from Everton in 2004, made 67 appearances for his boyhood team before he was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson.

Everton were his first choice for the fixture, but Martinez took some persuading because the game will be so close to the start of the Premier League season.

It is believed that both clubs have agreed that it will be a fully competitive fixture, without the usual celebrity circus that takes place in the second half of these games.

An official announcement on the fixture is expected next week but Martinez signed it off just hours after Everton’s Capital One Cup semi-final defeat against Manchester City.

Can't wait! :coffee:

Giving that players usually give money to charities from testimonial earnings I wonder could Wayne donate to Everton Football Club.

Thanks lad

An interesting (kind of) point to be made is that if Man City win the League Cup and finish in the top 4, and Man Utd finish 6th, then Man Utd will be involved in the Europa League 3rd Qualifying Round 2nd leg the following day.

So they'd either play a reserve team in Rooney's testimonial, or more likely, rearrange the game for another date.
