Hoping to go to Malta, sometime around next May; just me and her, no kids in tow. We like beaches, bars, city break stuff. (might do some scuba)

I've never been before and was hoping some of the well travelled on here might be able to offer good advice, places to eat / drink, things to see. That sort of thing.

We're looking at Sliema but open to suggestions.

Not been for years, but it's so small (about half the size of Anglesey) it doesn't really matter where you stay.

I do remember some of the beaches being quite nice, bus service seemed fine but I got a little scooter after the first couple of days and pretty much everywhere was a short ride away.

Valetta is a cool little place, and even if you're not into history go to the fort/museum thing and watch 'The Malta Story.' People have been fighting over that lump of rock forever.

I’ve spent loads of time in Malta, I love the place although it’s become over run with Arabs and Russians of late.
Gozo is stunning.
I prefer to stay in Sliema, everywhere is accessible from there.
There’s loads of excellent restaurants and bars. Valletta is great to walk around during the day but I wouldn’t stay there as it’s quiet at night.

Try the pastizzi, little pea or ricotta pasties, you can drink the local Cisk beer all day long as well.

Do a tour of Fort St Elmo in Valetta. It's where Midnight Express was filmed.

Just don't let them take you to the sanitarium.

Was our last holiday before lockdown. We loved the place. Stayed just outside Valletta for a few days and then a few days in a town called Gharb on Gozo. Its small and incredibly easy to get around, the buses are excellent. People are really nice, food is great, tons of history in a tiny area, we were there mid September and the weather was glorious.

I'd recommend:

Valletta - lovely, walkable, fascinating old city. Check out the museum and tour under the fort, tells the story of Malta's importance in WW2 in the rooms where it happened. Barraka gardens are lovely and the gun battery is good, all in the same area around the fort.

D'amato Records is ace, one of the oldest record shops in the world and still in family ownership, there's a bar called simply 'The Pub' where Oli Reed had his last legendary session that's well worth an hour or 3. I'd recommend a craft beer bar called Wild Honey as well.

I'd really advise a trip to Mdina, fabulous medieval walled city, and nearby on (if you're there on a Saturday) the whole Maltese league play in two stadiums, which is bloody good value.

Gozo is gorgeous, we stayed in a beautiful Air BnB in a lovely quiet little town, with one bar and restaurant, fortunately it was excellent, but its really easy to get around to other places. Victoria and the citadella are definitely worth a look. Ramla beach is fab.

I'd advise making your way to Gozo first, and then finshing on Malta before you come back, your not under pressure then to make the ferry crossing and fly same day (flights depending).

Good memories of Gozo. Very laid back and quiet compared to Malta.

Great food - massive portions. Rabbit stew was particularly ace.

Great beer and wine - Cisk went down well. Most if their vines are ancient Sicilian stock and they have great wine-making expertise so really good and I was blown away at the quality and variety.

Beaches - Great beach at Ramla bay other than that lots of rocky coves and inlets great for snorkling
