Shakhtar Donetsk: Brazilian striker Maicon dies in car crash

Shakhtar Donetsk striker Maicon Pereira de Oliveira died in a car crash in the Ukrainian city on Saturday, the club have announced.

In a statement on their website, Shakhtar said that the Brazilian, 25, was a "wonderful person".

"He was a talented footballer, open and friendly guy," the club added. "It is a terrible bereavement for each of us."

Maicon was on loan to Ukrainian league club Illichivets Mariupol until the end of the season.

He joined Shakhtar Donetsk on a free transfer in 2012 from fellow Ukrainian side Volyn Lutsk and made six appearances, scoring one goal.

The club have released no further details about the crash.

Can you explain? What perspective does it shift?

That football is just a game. We all get so worked up about winning and losing, our lack of transfers, who's on the injury list.. but when someone dies - in particular those who play the game - that all seems so pointless. I still remember seeing Muamba collapse and lay there motionless. The game I'd been following so intently then seemed meaningless, and it looked like everyone at the game felt the same.

That enough of an explanation for you?

Just seems a bit odd that you actually needed this to put into perspective rather than it being a meaningless platitude

Very sad but only big news because he's a footballer. He's not even a well known footballer on these shores.

I won't disrespect the dead, but the sensationalism and page-click desperation of it all stinks and is, in itself, disrespectful. RIP to the lad and best wishes to all affected.

Something like 1.5 million people die in traffic accidents each year, making it roughly the 9th most potent cause of death.

You know what is odd? Questioning why someone's death could change somebody's perspective of something. Do you go to funerals and ask why people are upset? Or, are you just a troll looking for an argument?

Get lost.

I'm not trying to offend you or start an argument. I do think it's a worthwhile place for debate.

For some reason that 'get lost' has made me feel really bad. I'm not trying to offend you, I just think sometimes people place too grandiose ideas onto people's deaths.

I'm with softy on this. He didn't mean anything bad, was just curious what you meant, Aquilani lad.
