Roberto Martinez says he will learn in the next 48 hours whether Romelu Lukakuwill be fit enough to face Watford in Everton's Premier League opener on Saturday.

John Stones and Kevin Mirallas are expected to shake off the ankle knocks they suffered against Villarreal in time for the clash, while winger Gerard Deulofeu(hamstring) has not yet been ruled out.

Tony Hibbert and Steven Pienaar (both hamstring) will definitely miss the visit of the Hornets and Darron Gibson will be out for at least another two weeks after undergoing minor surgery on his abductor muscle.

Meanwhile, Muhamed Besic and Aiden McGeady (both hamstring) are both pushing for returns against Southampton next weekend.

Lukaku sat out Everton's final two pre-season friendlies after complaining of a tight hamstring against Dundee and speaking at Thursday's pre-match press conference, Martinez said: “Rom needs extra assessment over the next 48 hours to see what his role is going to be at the weekend.

"Gerard Deulofeu has got an opportunity to be fit and, from the knocks we picked up [against Villarreal], Kevin Mirallas and John Stones seem to be ready to be available for the weekend.

"Mo Besic and Aiden McGeady are close and I don’t think they will be far away from being ready for the Southampton game.

Thought it was going to say pushing for a move to Watford. This sounds the same as last season and players seemed to vanish for months.

Could this have gone in the match thread?

“I would say from a medical point of view, he is fully fit. It is just a case of making sure we give him a good introduction to work with the group because he’s not had a chance to do that yet.

“I wouldn’t risk him in a pre-season game - but Rom will be fully fit for the start of the season against Watford at home.”

That came after the problem was first described as

“Not a problem at all. I think he got a lot of good work between the two games we’ve had up here, plus the games we had in Singapore.

“Now we have got a little period before the weekend [Leeds / Villareal] to make sure he is ready and refreshed.”

Obviously the rumours that Lukaku was actually out for three weeks had nothing in them...

Roberto Martinez in a talking fluff shocker. Who would have thought this phenomenal event would occur?

Its too regular for my liking stretching back as far as claiming he wouldn't need to return to Wigan for players... shortly before buying 4 of them

Martinez has no clue on injuries. 'It was just a precaution, nothing to worry about'. That was two weeks ago and now, like nearly everyone predicted he'll either miss out completely or be half fit for Warford. Remember Martinez saying how Gibson would be ready for the start of the season? Absolutely nowhere near. He should just keep his mouth shut on injuries.
