Player Valuation: £40m
Manuel Fernandes took a lot of Evertonian’s by storm last season with some superb performances in the middle of the park for Everton.
Most blue’s had their sight’s set on making Manuel a permanent fixture at Everton in the pre-season of 2007.
And rightly so, his performances for Everton from January to the end of the season were brilliant.
Evertonian’s were in dreamland that they had a player who had exceptional ability on the ball, brilliant passing, would get a tackle in and an eye for goal.
It took a while in the summer for David Moyes to finally make his move for the Portuguese under-21 star, and it looked pretty certain that ‘Manny’ would make his move to Goodison Park in August permanently.
Fernandes was having a medical with Everton and completed it prior to the Blackburn game in August 2007.
That weekend turned from delight to despair, when Manny made an astonishing u-turn and joined Valencia in a £12 million pound deal.
It had seemed like Manny was all set to join the blues and even made a promise to Bill Kenwright and Moyes that he was joining the club.
But in the end he signed for Valencia and a lot of Evertonians were furious at Manny for doing this, especially as he had given his word that he was going to join Everton.
Time moved on and Fernandes was forgotten about as Everton enjoyed great form and Fernandes was sat on the bench for Valencia after falling out with the manager and not performing to the ability we all know he has.
In December, rumours started circulating that Fernandes was set to join Everton again on loan, and he finally did that in early January to the delight of a lot of Evertonians who thought they were missing someone of Manny’s ability in the centre midfield role.
Fernandes started his first game back against Chelsea in the Carling Cup semi-final and looked like he was back to his form of last season at various stages in the game.
But this however is not the case, Manny has not even shown a glimpse of his ability we know he has, and his attitude has looked disgraceful.
Against Manchester City, he went down with an apparent groin injury, and was taken off only 10 minutes prior to coming on as a substitute, rumours circulated that he faked this apparent injury and didn’t want to play.
In January, Kenwright told the official site that Fernandes had phoned up David Moyes and told him that he would love to come back.
But the player himself just hasn’t shown that he want’s to be here, Fernandes attitude and ability shows that Everton may have made a lucky escape in the summer, where reports were they were offering £12 million to sign the player.
He has shown nothing of the player he was last season, poor distribution, slow on the ball, and the biggest thing that has gone out of his game, is that he doesn’t look like he wants to tackle anymore, he seems to move out of the way of tackles.
It now look’s very likely that Fernandes will not be joining Everton in the summer unless the lad bucks his idea’s up, which is a massive shame as Manny has the ability to be a world class player.
