Hi folks.

While I’ve previously taken an “it’s on in the background” approach and only really half watched his stuff, over the last month me and @Morag have got into his stuff.

Absolutely fascinating the way he can make people expose themselves without really pushing them. It’s a brilliant technique.

It’s all their own doing and they’re both willing and unwilling victims at the same time.

It's the David Frost School of Interviewing.
pretend to be a bit slow on the uptake and ask quite basic questions and eventually the Interviewee forgets the Interview context and drops their social filters.
Works even better for Theroux and he's there, living with him for an extended period of time.

In a way it's quite morally dubious and he basiclly befriends them until he gets what he wants then dumps on them in an hour of carefully selected highlights on National TV.

He's done loads of things mate, and his early ones are brilliant. The one on Saville is very very odd, especially knowing what we know now. It's actually a very hard watch.

He has a natural and unthreatening way with people.

I think that's a bit unfair on him. People usually have hung themselves out to dry. He's done a lot of great stuff about things like euthanasia where he genuinely cares about the people involved and so they trust in him and you get to learn more about the subject..

Think the best one he's done was about white supremacy in S Africa.

Watching the updates series were he looks back at some of his interviewees and he seemed to have a genuine warmth to most of them.

that one and the max Clifford ones were very good, his self effacing technique allows him to get through his interviewee's defences. I fed him very watchable.
