He was a VW fanatic.....

Basically, it's a blown up, better refined Captur.
The Captur is a very reliable car, had ours four and a half years from new and it's been a very good buy. Ours is diesel and round town/short journeys we get 50-54 mpg, on a longer run comfortably 65mpg or more if you drive sensibly.
I've had diesels for the last 15 years or so but recently decided to get a 2.0 petrol. If I stick to 70mph on the motorway I can get 50+ mpg. I can still get around 35mpg at 85/90 mph. Round town is another thing. It's mainly short journeys from cold, like picking my grandkids up from school. Pretty alarming when you first set off from cold uphill and the onboard computer says your only getting 9 mpg. Journeys under 3 mile tend to get around the 20mpg mark.
Manufactures mpg claims are nothing like you achieve in the real world.

Because manufacturers test in ideal conditions, which you don't have in real life - the best you could get to that is night city driving on empty streets (for city driving) or highway when it's a bit more free and you can set the cruise control to good speeds.

My Jeep gets crap mileage until it warms up or in too much start-stop, but highway is a dream if I keep it at normal speeds, as is night driving - better than the manufacturer MPG as well... but I won't mention what it is because it's still a Jeep and it's crap compared to what you've quoted lol
