And besides, there's no such thing as cold winters....just wrong clothing  You can't beat a cold winters day, when it's -15c outside and the sky is blue, air is clear and it's fresh outside; perfect!

I live in Nova Scotia. I'll tell you what beats a cold winters day ... a nice warm day. ;)

I was really considering moving abroad when im older in a holiday resort and opening up some kind of bar.

Would this be worth it or just a waste of time? I understand you;'d need to put the hours in but surely it would be worth it?

I know of at least 3 or 4 people that have owned bars in Thailand, Phillipines and greece.

There's not much profit, so it's a real lifestyle choice, lots of corruption in at least the SE Asia ones so you have to deal with the local gangs, and your staff are almost constantly stealing from you.

Theres also alot of prostitution, and hostess bars would bring their own problems again.

but other than that it's a blast!

That's because you have damp winters like Toronto. Edmonton is land locked and we have very dry, cold winters. -15c in Edmonton feels a lot better & 'warmer' than a Toronto -15c!

If you are a young, fit, single, male without solid white collar qualifications and experience, and looking to emigrate and make some cash, you'd be absolutely bonkers not to go to Canada or Australia and work in the mines.

If you are prepared to brave the extreme conditions (cold in Canada or hot in Australia) for even just a few years, the money you can earn can set you up for life to do whatever you want.

mines sounds a bit severe plus you'd be competing with the Chinese who have actual experience of working in the mines and probably lower wage demands.

Like Canada there are some mega (and I mean mega) oil and gas projects in their early stages in Oz (Wheatstone, Gorgon, various other LNG projects) crying out of all sorts and traditionally pay better than mining.

If I were in my 20's I would also consider Brazil, booming economy, World Cup and Olympics there in the next 4 years not to mention seriously fit women and cheap vitamins

This plus you'll invariably need a local partner who'll want a substantial share though will not invest and possiby **** you over at the first opportunity. You'll also find that various government officials, coppers, rmy and all sorts will visit you almost daily looking for handouts for permits, protection etc.

this is from experience .. a serious 6 figure sum lost in the last 2 years.

I've had the idea for a while but now I'm at a point due to one or two personal things where I'm in a position to do it with a relatively decent amount of start-up money, if I choose the right place.

I know this isn't very specific but I'd genuinely appreciate any advice on places, possibility of finding jobs/work, quality of life or even just what it's like to be away from your family and not go the match when you want etc, etc.

I've always had the idea of opening a little bar next to a beach somewhere like Thailand, but I appreciate that's not the most realistic thing in the world.

Cheers in advance! Ste

Your age and skills are the main criteria for permanent residency in Australia. Once you get over 34 it gets really difficult.
Some sort of trade ie brickie plumbers etc is good but bmw wins(boilermaker/welder) the big bucks $40ph living local. Mines pay way more but its usually 2 weeks on 1 off 12 hr days 14 straight and that can be shifts aswell.Another top payer in mining is diesel fitter/mechanics sparkies.
The work is hard the places inhospitable the pay is huge. I have 3 sons in the mining game all earning $100k plus. Hope this helps.

Just typed in "living abroad" on the off chance there was a thread about it. Then I remembered Chico is a member here LOL (didn't see that one coming did you hahaha). It's a good thread this, loads of good advice and stuff. I'm seriously considering moving abroad in some capacity when I'm done with uni. No idea where, but I don't really care as long as the weather is better than here, it's not too expensive and I'm relatively safe.

Somewhere with a different pace of life I think. I feel as though I'm constantly being taken advantage of/ripped off in this country.

If that's what's getting you down then I'd suggest that Thailand isn't the best to move to!
