New Years Day 2008
A MEMBER of one of north Liverpool’s most well-known families has been shot in the stomach, sparking fears of revenge attacks.
Danny Gee was blasted at point-blank range by a mystery gunman in Anfield at 5.30am on New Year’s Day.
Neighbours around Pulford Street today told how they feared the attack could spark tit-for-tat shootings in the area.
Mr Gee, 28, was shot once but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
He was taken by friends to the Royal Liverpool hospital, where he was being treated today.
Mr Gee is one of four well-known brothers from the notorious Grizedale estate in Everton.
Police yesterday cordoned off alleys and side streets and part of Walton Breck Road. They also mounted high-visibility patrols to reassure residents.
A man in his 20s wearing a grey tracksuit and a black hat, and thought to be the gunman, was seen fleeing the scene.
Detectives believe nobody other than Mr Gee and the gunman were involved in the incident.
The motive behind shooting is unclear. Police were today investigating the theory they had arranged to meet each other.
Locals said they thought it was linked to an attack on a house in Rockfield Road, Anfield, in the past month.
They said they feared the incident could spark a backlash of tit-for-tat shootings in the city.
One woman said: “There was that many fireworks going off that it was impossible to hear any gunshots.
“I came outside my house in New Years Day and there were police swarming everywhere. The buses have stopped and nobody can get to the shops.
“People know of Danny round here and it’s a shock to wake up and see all of this. What a start to 2008.â€
One resident said a bottle had been thrown through the window of a house on Bagnall Street moments before the shot was fired.
Yesterday, the glass was still smashed and a black bin bag had been taped over the gap.
Merseyside police said a statement would be taken from the victim when he was well enough to speak to officers.
Merseyside police Operations Superintendent for Liverpool North, John Martin, said high-visibility patrols would be stepped up in the area to provide reassurance.
He said: “This was a targeted attack and there are a number of lines of inquiry which we are following.
“Because of the time it took place, we would expect people to have heard or seen something and we would ask them to come forward.
“We will be increasing the police presence to reassure the public.â€
There have been a series of shootings in Liverpool over the past few days, including Toxteth and Broadgreen, but police say they did not believe the incidents were connected.

September 2008
A TEENAGE boy who shot a notorious drug dealer for terrorising his family has been locked up for seven years.
Jamie Starkey was only 16 when he fired at Daniel Gee from point-blank range during a New Year's day face-off.
Liverpool crown court heard one of the bullets went into Gee's stomach, pierced his lung, and went straight out of his back.
Gee, 28, was taken to hospital after the 5.30am shooting, but refused treatment.
Four days later he was arrested for master-minding a city centre drugs conspiracy.
It was initially feared the shooting had been sparked by gang warfare, but the court heard Starkey had been motivated by fear.
Michael Scholes, defending, told how Starkey, who has learning difficulties, fired at Gee after months of violence and threats.
But Judge John Roberts said the court had to deter vigilante justice.
He said: “People must not be allowed to think they can take the law into their own hands and use firearms for these purposes in a public street.â€
The judge said he accepted Starkey had acted out of concern for his family, specially his mentally-ill mother.
Mr Scholes told the court Gee and his gang had tormented Starkey's family, using increasing violence.
He alleged they had thrown bricks at Starkey's family home, rammed his brother's car and repeatedly threatened his relatives.
On one occasion, Mr Scholes said, associates had smashed every window at his home on Rockfield Road, Everton, covering his four-year-old sister in glass.
Days before the shooting it is claimed Gee had kidnapped one of Starkey's friends and imprisoned him in a derelict house where he had stoned him.
On New Year's Eve, Starkey had been out celebrating in Everton when he encountered Gee's “cronies†who threatened to shoot him.
Fearing for his life and fuelled by alcohol and cannabis, Starkey fled to a derelict property on his road, where a Colt revolver was hidden.
During a 15-minute confrontation in nearby Pulford Street, witnesses heard Gee threatening Starkey's family and goading him.
At one point, Gee told him: “Shoot me now or I'm gonna go and kill your mother.â€
Mr Scholes said: “He (Starkey) just wanted to show them he wasn't frightened of them.
“He wanted to put an end to the bullying. He thought if he showed them he wasn't frightened of them that would put an end to the bullying behaviour.â€
Wearing a white shirt, the dark-haired Starkey glanced nervously and smiled at his parents in the public gallery as he was sentenced.
Starkey thanked the judge as he was led down.
He had pleaded not guilty to attempted murder, but admitted wounding with intent and possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life.
Crook’s reign of terror
CROOK Daniel Gee was jailed for seven-and-a-half years in June for running a drugs racket flooding the streets of Merseyside with class A drugs.
While Gee, 28, was driven around in a £60,000 Range Rover by one of his gang, children he had recruited delivered the drugs on bikes.
Gee also ordered his pregnant girlfriend Kelly Wallace to cut and package the drugs from a plush city centre apartment.
But yesterday the court heard the crime boss, formerly of Maryport Close, Everton, ruled the community with terror.
Starkey's barrister Michael Scholes said: “This was an area and a group of people who were being terrorised by people, and one individual in particular, who regarded themselves as above the law or in place of the law, administering arbitrary justice.â€
He added: “Although a good deal of their activities are well-known to the police, because of their reputation and the sheer terror to law-abiding and not necessarily completely law-abiding citizens in the area, Daniel Gee and others associated with him have been able to avoid the consequences of their violence.â€
Following the shooting, the court heard Gee sent a text message to Starkey offering not to speak to police in exchange for £20,000.
He has never given evidence and no-one who witnessed the shooting agreed to give evidence in court.

A 21-year-old man was gunned down in the street outside his family home last night. Jamie Starkey was executed by a lone gunman in a “targeted†attack as he walked to his car on Higher Lane in Fazakerley.
Mr Starkey had only recently been released from prison after being jailed in 2008 for shooting notorious Liverpool drug dealer Daniel Gee.
Emergency services rushed to the street last night after receiving reports of the shooting around 8pm, but paramedics were unable to save Mr Starkey, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police confirmed he had been shot several times by his attacker, who then ran off towards the playing fields.
One neighbour spoke of her horror after watching as Mr Starkey lay dying in the rain outside his family home with his parents and little sister believed to be inside at the time.
She said: “The poor lad was lying in the street. I didn’t hear any shots. I just heard all the commotion.â€
Another neighbour said he heard three “distinct†gunshots. He added: “I was in the house when I heard it, it sounded like a distinct gun shot, like a hand gun. It’s quiet down there but it’s still a rough area – it’s not unusual to have police down here.â€
At just 16, motivated by fear after months of violence and threats from Daniel Gee and his gang, Mr Starkey fired at Gee from point-blank range during a New Year's day face-off in Anfield in 2008.
Mr Starkey was jailed for seven years after pleading guilty to wounding with intent and possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life.
Four days after being shot Gee, then 28, was arrested for master-minding a city centre drugs conspiracy and eventually jailed for seven-and-a-half-years.
In May 2010, Gee was jailed indefinitely after being caught conspiring to buy guns and threatening to kill Mr Starkey. Gee is still in prison and will not be put in front of a parole board until 2014 at the earliest.
Last night police sealed off Higher Lane from its junction with Long Lane, and officers were carrying out house-to-house inquiries. The road once linked Long Lane with Longmoor Lane but is now blocked off near the grounds of Altcourse Prison. Neighbours said the attack happened near the road block.
One women, who did not wish to be named, said: “I was shocked when I saw all the police cars, they just came from everywhere.
“There’s trouble everywhere but it’s shocking when it’s on your doorstep. I just feel sorry for the family. They are a nice family, I knew them from passing and the dad’s a lovely fellow.â€
Within hours of the shooting a “rest in peace jamie starkey x†group had been set up on Facebook and had attracted dozens of members.
Chief Supt Jon Ward, area commander for Liverpool North, re-affirmed the force’s commitment to tackling gun crime.
He added: "This was a cold-blooded, calculated shooting of a 21-year-old man who had recently been released from prison after shooting another male on New Year's Day 2008.
“There is no doubt that this was a targeted shooting and that whoever did this meant to kill Jamie Starkey.
â€We believe that some members of the criminal fraternity will know who did this and will know what lies behind it and I would appeal to them to contact us.
“Jamie Starkey was just 21 years old and should have been looking forward to his future, but he chose a path which has ultimately led to his death.â€
