LiverPool Echo - Hillsborough

davek- you wont even have it from the horses mouth, youve already made your mind up. its obvious the police in sheffield caved in to mob mentality `open the fcken gates porky` etc etc. the fans `with a conscience` - dont make me laugh. theyve kept the bereaved families suffering and will continue to do so

The question wasn't about whether Liverpool supporters behaved like a mob on the day - many of them did - the question was about the cause of the disaster, and I cant see how you can elevate their behaviour to the same level as those responsible for maintaining safety (as the Esk pointed out). Did they contribute to the days unfolding horror? Yes, not all but many did and many were reluctantly literally carried away by the movement of others and had no alternative than go with the flow.

I can understand that people see Liverpool supporters using Hillsborough for their own ends and to avoid responsibility, I really can. I think that part of the disaster hasn't been noted near enough. But the fundamental causes weren't down to their fans: if organisation on the day is adequate and grounds back then weren't controlled to avoid crowd disturbance as much as they were then that event wouldn't have happened. Take any rowdy crowd like that Liverpool one into any situation in the PL today and there'd be no major incident, That's why the conclusions of the Taylor Inquiry suggested what they suggested.

What cheeses me off is young Liverpool fans talking about it like they were there.

The emotional impact could not possibly have hit them.

I lost a good friend that day. The whole city was stunned. It wasn't about football. It was about people. It was about the city.

The way LFC supporters have made it 'all about them' is interesting to say the least.

Instead of compassion and a search for 'justice', we see aggression and volatility.

I asked a Liverpool fan: what would have to happen for 'justice' to be done? He could not answer. Could anyone?

R.I.P. all those who died that day and sympathy to the families who still suffer to this day.

you make eloquent points but theyre not very realistic. the gates were opened.... right? but you expect the police to use themselves as a barrier to stop hoards of fans pouring in? the bit ive highlighed is a large part of the question because 1989 was a totally different beast- you cant judge it on todays standards so its no use drawing comparrisons. crowd control (or lack of) seems to be what you are getting at. the fans behaviour on that day was pretty much `normal` for that era.

Respect for those that so needlessly died, and justice for all those responsible that day.
