aspire one. there are 2 versions and 1 of them is £179
Acer Aspire One A110L White N270 512MB 8GB 8.9" Net Book - Tesco.Direct

it says the hard drive is a "nand flash module" whats this ?
they have a 120gb hard drive for £30 as well so a documents could then be shared between laptops, and they'd be backed up as well. it looks a good deal to me, certainly looks smart. they have one for £240 as well that is royal blue.

anyone know about these little laptops ?

My neice got the Asus EE for free from her new secondary school.:o Good little piece of kit too thinking of getting one myself.

Reidy, that is one class little net-book. It won a magazine square off against the Asus EEE. Not only did it run better, but it was a damn site cheaper too.

A NAND 'hard drive is just flash memory being used in place of the hdd. They are lighting quick to read from but not so quick writing, and traditional HDD's are currently faster unless you are getting the lastest solid state drive from Intel.

Anyhoo, as a second computer for on the go they are top class, but [Poor language removed] as a first computer. I am getting an Aspire One as I am going back to school soon.

So, buy an Aspire One, get the 120Gb HDD and get a 6-cell battery (~4 hours of DVD watching potential) and you are set for mobile action (these come with WI-Fi adapters too, so hit the hot-spots)

The nand flash thing is just a different kind of hard drive. It's solid state rather than a 'disk', like a memory stick or an mp3 player, so you can make them a lot smaller, hence putting them in mini-laptops.

That deal is very good, I haven't heard one bad thing about them.

Linux is an open-source OS. Lots of stuff out there for it. If all you wanna do is surf the web, watch DVD's and use an Office suite, Linux will be just fine. There is tons of open-source stuff out there which will run just fine on Linux.

what exactly is linux ?
will i find that stuff wont work that i have already ?

Most micro computers only have a 8G hard drive. You could probably run it on Linux. However on the flash computers I don't think they are apt for running MS Office. Open office is almost just as good and its free anyway.

Reidy! You don't want that!

It comes with 2Gb of disk space!!! And it is SSD, so it means it isn't as cheap as it should be! For $10 over here you can double the capacity by buying a 2GB thumb drive. Why even ship it with a hard-drive?????

And it only has 128Mb of RAM, honestly, that little laptop can't even run windows effectively these days, which is why it comes with Linux (which will probably not be the fastest running program either)

Well, operation 'Convince the wife this netbook is a good idea' was a resounding success.

Got me a superb little Aspire One,which I am posting this on (while listening to Slacker Radio over my brand new 802.11n spec wireless network, remember this laptop already has a wi-fi card built in.)

Got it in dark blue, as it was that or burgundy. It has the 8Gb SSD Hard-drive, but also came with an 8Gb SDHC card that sits in the 'Storage Expansion' slot that runs as a hard drive. Running Window XP SP3 flawlessly.

I am struggling to find a con with this little laptop. Well, ok, the keyboard is tiny....but the whole computer is tiny.

Conclusion....buy one if you are looking for a second computer to move around with. An absolute bargain.

As far as I'm concerned, laptops should be as big as you're able to carry in a decent looking bag...

God didn't make the interweb so I would have to watch dodgy Japanese porn on a tiny 8" screen...

I'm currently surfing GOT on my Dell XPS. It's fairly new and has been good so far. It's not a little laptop but it isn't gigantic either.
