Lionel Messi = Jim Kelly?

I follow football to regulate excess serotonin.
l acknowledge the other-worldly qualities of the play of Messi, and anyone who doesn't think he's been the reason that Barca has been what they have been for the past [fill in blank] years needs to get out more.

That said, since I haven't started a really crap thread in many moons, let me posit this:

With Argentina becoming the Buffalo Bills of international football in the same era that Messi's pre-eminence has blossomed, can we say that in terms of international football his role is to be that of the beloved former quarterback of those Bills? I don't read the Argie sports press, but my understanding is that they are as unreasonable as they are passionate, and the dysfunction of the AFA is no surprise.

It's Argentina, after all. Who can blame him. And then he does a Scott Norwood. Fate is harsh.

If you want to find me the UK equivalent of Jim Kelly, feel free. Find a beloved player with surpassing leadership qualities, football skill, and toughness, plus a great deal of longevity. Just couldn't ever win the final.

Discuss.

First off, we never get to the final so it's a toughie. Secondly, can't think of a British player who's ever been anywhere near the level of Messi at club level.

I suppose Bryan Robson at Man Utd could be considered one of the best players never to win the League, CL or anything at international level. Boss player. Scored and created goals, gave his all for the team and was in some decent Utd sides and half decent England sides.
Couldn't get past the Merseyside axis in the 80s.

Not just get there.

Get there again and again and again, and lose every time.

Le Tissier probably the obvious one.

Nowhere near good enough.

You're looking for a footballer who like messi was hailed as a revelation in terms of talent, like messi dominated the club scene but like messi never won anything internationally despite reaching mutiple finals and semi finals with a superbly talented team.

Essentially you're looking for Johan Cruyff.

Going back a generation, Puskas was probably another.

Hungary were expected to walk the 1954 World Cup final (according to my arl fella) but the West Germans beat them.

Puskas then went on to be an integral part of the 1950s version of the Real Madrid Galacticos.
