LinkedIn - Do you use it?

TBH I think that's where the real contacts etc are made. Got to be active on subjects you know and care about and it grows from there.

Yeah for me I've been encouraged to go to these events for 'networking' and using LinkedIn to support it, get my face and name out there and that. I just can't be arsed though!

Same mate. I know the value of 'networking' but it's usually just full of tedious [Poor language removed] or pretentious know-it-alls. That's the game these days though.

Aye it is.

We had a 'major player from the facilities management arena' do a guest lecture the other day. Nearly passed out when I heard that sentence. Ridiculous.

I'm on it but I have no idea what's going on with it. I just don't get it. "Who are you people and why would I want to connect with you?"

I use it, depends on your business. If you have a job where you don't really need to network it might be a bit pointless. Agree about the endorsements thing, I've seen people on there with 500+ contacts but been endorsed 30 times for there main skill, doesn't mean there bad at it. Likewise I've seen people with 50 contacts been endorsed by half of them which means there mates have thrown a + on it !
Maybe its better for freelancers or people looking for a freelancer for a particular job but want a recommendation from a trusted source?
The groups can be handy as well, there is a Evertonians in buisness group on there if you want to show your colours.

Recommendations are much better than those worthless endorsements. LinkedIn allows you to ask someone you worked with or for, like a past manager, to write you a recommendation, which is like a reference on a normal CV but obv more detailed. Once they submit it you get the chance to accept it, or swerve if its not helpful. Only catch is that you still need to be on good terms... The proper nerds on LinkedIn will have at least one recommendation for each job - or even project - they've had.

I have it and use it a bit.

My brother is the Director of Recruting for a high end 'boutique' consulting firm, and he defo uses it. It's just another tool. In his Company quite a bit of vetting is done before hiring. NOT having LinkedIn would be frowned upon.

For me the best part of it is the content posted by people in your field of work. Allows you to keep up to date with market trends and learn from other peoples success/mistakes.
Also good for contract work if that's the sort of thing you do.

We should start a GOT network!
