LinkedIn - Do you use it?

Simple question really. Are you on LinkedIn and do you see a value in it?
Yep. And yes there is some value in it. Endorsements are utter drivel though.

Also getting bugged more and more by recruitment agents, which could be a good thing if you are looking for a job, but I find it a little irritating as they just use LinkedIn to grow their database.

Unless you're a career whore, who's looking to network for their next potential move, it's utterly pointless.

I was initially quite keen as it seemed like a professional connection site, but it has become a bit annoying with people 'tweeting' stuff they think is interesting, and people who have nowt to do with you or your profession trying to connect to you. Don't use it as much as I did, quite a few friends feel this way as well and one has shut his account down.

This. Huge waste of time. I get endorsed daily for things I haven't got a clue about by people I've never even met.

I find it can be useful for recruiting and for being recruited.

I'm on it, it was a pain in the 'arris though. I kept getting agents and companies contacting me offering me work which, unless i was going to work 80 hours a week, I had no chance of finding time to do. I reduced the amount of info on techie skills in my profile and really just use it as a way of leaving a footprint for people I've worked with in the past who I've lost contact with, to get in touch.

I'm self employed as a career coach and leadership trainer. I use it to promote my work or direct people to my website or a blog that I find interesting.

If you've got an management or professional career and you're jobseeking, I think LinkedIn is an essential tool. You find out about vacancies that you might not find by more traditional routes. You can connect with people who can help you. And as somebody above says, recruiters deffo look at your profile.

I limit my usage to about 10 mins a day. Like anything else on the internet, it's not for everyone. To get the best from it takes a bit of effort at the start to get your profile right then after that just a bit of activity every day or every few days can give results. Depends on your objective.

use it daily as both a company marketing platform, and 'business facebook', curating articles of interest around my profession. The main reason I continue to use it is that I've used it for ages to stay in touch with several hundred business contacts and their moves: No way would I be able to keep track of that otherwise. Still a pain in the rear (as others have said) for recruiters, but I'd rather be contacted too much than not at all. On balance, I'd recommend it depending on your goals for using it, and its potential benefits / pains in the neck.

This could not be further from the truth.

Are you saying that people who want to succeed in their careers are career whores?? Or that it's basically a job posting site?

Wow! Just wow! If that is the case.

Given that I have a very successful one myself, no.

However, that site is used by many as a glorified self promotion / networking site.

Maybe my reply was somewhat flippant, as I'm sure to people working on trying to grow their small businesses, it can be a great prospecting tool, but those reasons aside what tangible purpose does it serve? go on, educate me.

There's many, many reasons to use it.

Yes, small businesses can certainly benefit from it. Sales functions within an organization can benefit too - the ability to reach people who are connected to your connections by way of an introduction - certainly benefits sales functions - whether from an SMB perspective of FTSE100. It provides a 'warm' introduction as opposed to a cold call.

In addition, marketing can benefit from a similar purpose. New product releases, focus groups etc... etc... reaching out to your connections with new insights provides cheap marketing communications.

Aside from tracking where your own connections are moving to - again opening up the possibilities for repeat business from a sales perspective.

From a recruitment/job posting site - clearly it has its benefits.

The ability for people who've changed careers to socialize this within their connections - again lends itself well to networking and career progression. The groups function is ideal for such a thing.

There is also the opportunity to approach connections for mentoring roles. I know of several people that have both approached people as well as been approached.

I will agree that over the last 12m or so that it has been used more of a social networking tool with many users posting what should be posted on fb or twitter. However, more of my connections and myself included are choosing to disconnect from those using it for that purpose.\
