Linesmen at kids football

I was asked to run the line at my sons game the other day, what a nightmare. Having played and watched the game for 35 years, I never noticed that the lino puts his flag in different positions for different things!

I just waved every time there was a foul, corner, goal, offside etc.

The players (all under 11) and the ref were losing it totally.

One throw in, the lad picked up the ball and said to me, "where is it?" .."it's in yer hands .." I said thinking he meant the ball, "no you know the [Poor language removed] throw in.." he said.

Even I was howling.

I was running the line at my son's under 12 game today and the opposition linesman clearly didn't understand the offside rule. Flagging for offside from a throw in, flagging for offside when a player was dribbling, flagging when they were in their own half. He even flagged for offside from a corner. Not just once or twice, but constantly. Luckily the ref (himself a kid about 14) realised he was a donkey and never blew his whistle once.

I know the recent changes have made it slightly more complicated, but surely it's not that hard to understand the basics.

I see where you're coming from, Re peoples Ignorance, but even top class linesmen can't get their heads around 'when the ball is kicked, not when he gets it' - never mind the more obtuse stuff

Done it once for a Sunday league game. Was getting abuse from both sides.
I looked over and the flag on the other side was poking out the top of a pram. Stuff that.

U12's should not play offside, many don't.

They should also only be playing 9v9 at the most.

It should also be non competitive.

All the best league's in England do all of these.
