I'd love life insurance. But I get binned off every time for actually being honest when answering the questions.

Some firms are far better than others with various medical conditions, family medical history, BMI etc. If you genuinely would like insurance and want to have a chat let me know, happy to get some basic details and give you an idea as to who might be the best insurer to approach or put you in touch with someone I know that works closely with a company that cover cases that most insurers won't touch.

I work for an insurer and get life and critical illness as part of my benefit package, I added it on for the wife though as it costs buttons and I save NI on it

Unfortunately it costs far more than the life cover and doesn't cover half the things that people think it does, or if it does cover a condition that you'd expect it to then you need to make sure you're aware at what stage it'll cover you i.e. Most policies cover breast cancer, however if you get breast cancer it doesn't mean it automatically pays out, you'll tend to find it will only pay out if it's above a certain Grade/Stage of cancer, and the same goes for other illnesses that they state they cover.

Income Protection policies are an alternative, still not the cheapest but pay a monthly benefit to cover your living costs if you can't work and that incorporates much more minor things as well as serious illnesses. If you broke your legs and were off work for 6 months a critical illness policy isn't gonna do anything, an Income Protection policy (Full policy not one of the budget ones) will cover up to 60% of your income and be much more useful in those circumstances.

Funnily enough I had an email today to say a client has been paid £300k on their critical illness policy due to cancer diagnosis, invaluable cover if you can afford it and genuinely need it.

I had it entwined with my endowment mortgage donkeys years ago. Resented the hell out of it. Years later though I kept the endowment after I converted to a repayment mortgage, and it paid out a healthy little sum on fruition, which more it less paid for my boat. I then rented out the house and lived aboard for 10 years or so.

Since I have no dependents (hurrah) there has never been any point. I figured that if I fell off my perch, the house would be flogged and the banks would get their cash back (and more I suspect).

Now I've fallen into the marriage trap I still don't have it. Frankly its 50 or so a month is rather spend on living - life insurance id not much different from gambling - and I'm not mug enough to enter that game.. Again, when i die, what the missus is left with, which I earned with a lifetime of work, is all her's to do with as she chooses.

There's already enough reasons for her to benefit from my demise ffs!
