I've watched Liam a few times this season, saw him quite a bit last season when at Yeovil. I love watching him play. The way he runs games, dominates the midfield. Loves a tackle, a wide range of passing and gets a goal. Always thought he'd get a chance this season, especially with his performances in the U23's.

So I was surprised to see Joe Williams make the bench last night before Liam, especially after his injury. Maybe Koeman doesn't rate Walsh?!

Every time I have seen him play this season for the U23's he has been the standout performer, plays a similar role to Barry and Schneiderlin. Maybe not bigger enough and powerful enough for Koeman to try him yet, but certainly looks a player.

I'm just guessing. And there plenty of people on here who know more about the youth set up.

Was Williams picked ahead of him last night because of Utd size in midfield?

And how much influence would unsworth have on this decision?

Last year I always found it strange how Walsh was on the bench, while Williams and davies where 1st choice. Then Walsh goes on loan. Unsworth gets the last game and plays Davies. RK comes in probably speaks with unsworth about the un23's he speaks highly of davies. Who gets promoted to the 1st team squad

I remember a un21 derby game last year just before Walsh went to Yeovil. We won 3-1 and unsworth made a point about Williams and davies'a size in midfield.

It's all opinions, but I think Walsh is great player. And would be a big loss if he was shown the door because of his size.

Like I said guess work

I really have seen very little of the under 23s , just clips mostly and I am not really qualified to say if Walsh or Williams is most deserving of a call up to the first team. It could very easily be the type of player the manager felt he needed on the bench rather than just a choice between two players.

The one game that I did see in total a few weeks ago was against Southampton(I think) and in that game I was more impressed with Williams than Walsh.

In fairness to Williams he's done really well coming back from various injuries and always seems to play well for the U23s, forcing himself into the England U20s/21s before injury disrupted things for him. At one time you'd say he was behind Davies, Dowell, Ledson and Walsh in our "Golden Generation" of midfielders often lacking the subtlety others showed, but he's certainly got the character and determination .

Walsh is a puzzle to me. Like everybody else I've watched him over the last few years at u18 and u21/23 and he's always been impressive. He did well at Yeovil and in comparison seemed to do better than Ledson at Cambridge in terms of fans comments. Yet there have been no England Youth call ups , no pre season first team games, no featuring in the squads. What is it that's missing , he doesn't seem to be the type of player who would shirk tackles and hard work in training, gets regular praise from Unsy after games, steps up and takes vital penalties showing leadership qualities, so is it his size? Fifteen months ago he was scoring his wonder goal for the u18s ...... with Davies playing alongside him that day, how times have changed. His exploits for a winning U23s team won't have gone unnoticed by other scouts, but he's got a contract until June 2019 so we absolutely shouldn't be writing him off or the club selling him on yet. Walsh is the type of player that defines a club's set up in that our coaching staff should be working with him on whatever weakness he's deemed to have got and preparing him for first team football in the next 15 months. He eventually may be deemed just not good enough, but we're a long way from that yet.

...Walsh is a super player but I can only think RK isn't convinced. He didn't take him to Dubai on the winter break and doesn't include him in squads travelling to away matches. It's all about opinion and I wouldn't be surprised if Liam Walsh moves to a Championship team in the summer, he'll certainly be in demand.

I wouldn't read too much into it, because barring injury I don't think either were close to getting into the match.

My older brother who seen the great bobby collins stated he is just like him potentially - should have been on the bench all season!

Go along with that Joey, I've watched Liam since he was sixteen and like Bobby Collins he demands action from his teammates, gets annoyed with them for mistakes, gets annoyed with himself when he makes them, size shouldn't matter,
I've heard Joe Royle rates him highly and says that his size will not be an handicap to him.

When it comes to free kicks and corners he puts many of the first team to shame, some of them don't get it past the first man, not Liam, if he doesn't get a go in the first team before the end of the season I'll be surprised. Maybe Liam is too
mouthy for Koeman, just guessing at that, but I don't think Liam will be backward in coming forward if you know what I mean.

...the signs aren't good for him, Dave. I love watching the little fella and he could do no more than impress as much as he did at Yeovil but he's not around the matchday squad (Kenny and Joe Williams have been on the bench, D C-L and Pennington getting game time etc). I know for certain Martinez thought he was the best of the bunch but he appears some way down RKs list.

How would you compare Davies, Williams and Walsh + what do you think Ledson lacked to push through ?

Sounds like Walsh has a gob on him and was outstanding for Cambridge and seems to be 'all action'....on paper a leader?

Bobby Collins was small in a harder tougher game!

Anyone know if he is fit? Has had a few injuries this season, maybe that is why he was not included ahead of Williams. Be interesting to see if he plays for the U23's against Spurs next week, he did sign a new contract in September so maybe Koeman has seen something in him.

Davies has come into the first team and we've all seen how well he has performed, Joe Williams I rated very highly, before
he got injured, thought he was better than Davies, haven't seen him since he came back, he's got it in him to do very well,
he hasn't let the bad injury get him down or hold him back, looks like he is having a good go at getting back to where he was, I rate Walsh at least the equal of those two but hasn't had the chances the other two lads have had, don't know the
reason, maybe Eggs is correct and Koeman doesn't rate him, if he leaves Everton it will be our loss and some other teams
gain, and it will be a big loss.

Ryan Ledson is another good player, was offered a decent contract at the end do lastl year, didn't want to play reserve team
football for the next couple of years and had the confidence to go to a lower league and play first team football, I believe hois in the running for player of the season in that league with Oxford Unt.
