It's a difficult situation. The fans are disillusioned and there is a lack of confidence which is tangible around the stadium during matches.
When we have scored this season there hasn't raucous celebrations, but rather a restrained feeling of relief mixed with visible concern.
How are our defence going to cope with the expected onslaught? Will we crumble at the back? Will we ever be able to finish off a team?
It doesn't help when the football is so tepid and some of the decisions have been bordering on ludicrous. People are nervous and it shows.
I think we all want to have the grandiose and aggressive atmosphere back that we know Goodison can produce, but people are too worried.
As a gentlemen who sits near to me mentioned, 'It's not enjoyable being at Goodison at the moment. It's almost tedious'. Think back a year...
I wholeheartedly agree that we should be getting behind the lads, however it's hard as good performances help build atmosphere.
Maybe our expectations have been forced too high after last season: are we expecting too much and that's restraining our support?
Also, is it complacency on our behalf? For too long have our fans been unable to grasp that we've been in a relegation tussle to some degree.
Now that we certainly are, we need to build some atmosphere and support more than ever, yet equally the players need to inspire the fans.
Like with the players and manager scenario, we're in a vicious cycle where people seem unable to budge. Personally it's worrying.
A couple of wins at home, combined with good performances (which we've lacked all season) will make the world of difference to how we react.
Unfortunately, it seems somewhat difficult to imagine such a run and that therefore begins to fuel the fires of discontent and concern.
As
@4737carlin mentioned, the atmosphere has became toxic. Maybe that's what worries me the most, as it's the worst it's been in a long time.
