A thread for anyone trying to learn a second language. Opportunity to share materials, techniques, etc.

I’m sure there are also people who might be native speakers of the language someone is learning who would be willing to lend a hand?

Anyone who speaks English as a second language, an opportunity to ask for some help from a native English speaker?

I use Duolingo to try and learn Portuguese. Good app with every language you could think of but think its more useful as an accompaniment to proper lessons. Used it daily for about a year and I can read a lot of Portuguese now. Can’t understand what anyone is saying like.

Plus points for being the first serious reply.

Why did you decide to learn Portuguese?

Duolingo is certainly a good tool but like you say, leads to good reading comprehension and maybe a bit of speaking but falls short with listening.

If you’re still doing it I’d recommend finding a Portuguese radio station and listening to that (passively) as often as possible. At the same time find a good Portuguese TV programme and watch it with subtitles.
