I'm sat enjoying a real ale infused with simco hops in a pub in the brecon beacons. The bar serves a decent range of four or five decent unpasturised flavoursome skillfully produced ales.

Just about everyone whose walked in so far has ordered a San miguel.

Now I'm not setting out to criticise lager drinkers or make them feel inferior in any way,* but as somebody who likes a bit of unique flavour to explore in my ales, lager has never once appealed to my palette. I find it absolutely characterless, and served so cold there's little flavour of note.

I can see the appeal on a genuinely hot summers day when cider isn't available but I'm genuinely curious what is it people see in factory mass produced pasteurised lager compared with a good ale?

*but they're clearly scabby ner-do-wells

For many of my younger years I was the archetypal CAMRA bore, searching out the most obscure real ales.

Now an oldie, my Ned Kelly has changed for the worst, and I sadly now can't stomach bitter or pale ales.

I agree that lagers are largely tasteless Euro-fizz, but all I can drink now, if not knocking back a cider.

I got into the habit of drinking lager out of habit when I was younger despite never really enjoying it. In the last few years I've started drinking cider much more and actually enjoy it.

I now have two former beer drinking buddies who only now can drink wine .... and white wine at that. It's a horrible thing to have happened. I hope it never happens to me or fridays won't be worth getting through the week for.

Plus I'll probably have around 100 pints of homebrew in stock that'll be wasted :(

I suppose habit is how habit draws you in.

Come over ... leave the dark side.

Not a lager fan, but you said 'your palette' (sic), and that, is your answer.
Years of teaching scrotes who can't spell has wrecked my own spelling. My phone suggested it, it didn't look wrong enough to ring alarm bells, so I left it. Now you've pointed it out it looks horrendous.

Can I blame the beer?

Yes of course, it was the beer wot dun it ;)

...not keen at all on lager, can’t remember having a pint of draught since I was a youngster. If Guinness isn’t available, I don’t mind a pint of bitter.

When I was a kid playing footy I was advised to drink ‘dark beer’, it didn’t take long to like it.

Are you my brother from another mother?
I have also never drunk lager since I was a teenager. Guinness is also my regular drink of choice, although I do like to occasionally sample the 'guest ales' in my local.
