So often the runt of the transfer period Everton have this summer turned that around with progressive ingoing’s and outgoings at the club. The sale of injury prone midfield pair Jack Rodwell and Tim Cahill loosened wage budget purse strings and created a bigger transfer kitty.
They snatched Kevin Mirallas from under the nose of Arsenal, re-signed Steven Pienaar on a permanent deal, held on to Leighton Baines and brought in Steven Naismith on a free transfer.
Put together with the bargain buys of January; Darron Gibson and Nikica Jelavic and Everton seem to have a team capable of pushing for the top 4 once again.
But what else could they get up to before the deadline closes on Friday?
Bryan Oviedo
The Costa Rican left-back has been a long term target for David Moyes and it is believed he wants extra protection for Leighton Baines in the position. The 22 year old is available for around £4 million from FC Copenhagen with a work permit being the only potential issue in a transfer, but Everton will definitely try pushing this one through.
Johnny Russell
Nikica Jelavic is now the Toffees undoubted frontman and despite the obvious attacking talents of Maraoune Fellaini, Steven Naismith, Kevin Mirallas and Victor Anichebe Everton could use more depth in this position. One player they have been linked with is Dundee United prospect Johnny Russell, who at 22, would be a great addition for the future.
Michael Owen
Or they could go the other way with experience and bring in boyhood Evertonian Michael Owen for a season. His wages would be costly but as a backup to Jelavic the striker will surely remember where the goal is in important moments. His wages may be a stumbling block but the nostalgic idea of playing at Goodison may sway a deal.
Charlie Adam
Everton are pushing for the top 4 this season and need midfield depth. Charlie Adam is not wanted at Liverpool and his set pieces could be deadly (on par with Leighton Baines) with the likes of Fellaini and Jelavic in the box. Available at £5 million Everton might fancy it.
Barrie McKay & Matthew Kennedy
Moyes is keen to invest in young players and the two Scotsman have been linked with a move to Goodison. McKay is a highly talented 17 year old striker with a bright future ahead of him and would bean easy buy from cash strapped Rangers. Kennedy is a 17 year old pacy winger who Everton would also like to add to the youth, reserve and eventual first team picture at Goodison Park.

Th 20 year old St Mirren midfielder has been compared to cross Stanley Park rivals legend Graeme Souness for his style of play and scored a screamer on the opening day for the Paisley side. At 20 another young Scot that may interest Moyes.
Centre Back & Goalkeeper
Everton could use more depth at the centre back position. Distin and Jagielka are the current starting pair, whilst Jonny Heitinga was one of their standout players last season, but apart from that Shane Duffy is all they have. Unless they feel the Irish youngster is ready another centre half would not go amiss at Goodison.
Meanwhile Jan Mucha is seen by many as an inadequate replacement for Tim Howard and a younger goalkeeper, such as Manchester United’s Sam Johnstone could be considered.

In terms of selling players Everton are already thin on the ground, and the proposed sale of Jonny Heitinga should not be considered as his versatility and class is vital during the busy periods.

Meanwhile if the signing of Bryan Oviedo does go ahead, England youth left back Luke Garbutt should be sent out on loan. Middlesbrough are reportedly interested after losing Joe Bennett and Championshiip football would do him good.
