I can see the logic with wingers, but not fullbacks. I take it you're referring to Liverpool playing Johnson at left back tonight? To me, it doesn't make a lot of sense, as it takes a lot of the effectiveness out of Johnson's attacking play. It does feel alien too playing on the 'wrong' side too.

I suppose it didn't harm Denis Irwin though.

I tend to think that it's often done as a necessity, with no other left-footers available rather than a tactical move.

If you're going to have to play a right-footer at fullback, I would have put Mascherano there myself and kept Johnson where he's most effective. Masch would just have to defend and not worry about getting forward.
