Keith (couldn't) Hackett on Christmas Refereeing

Just get video replays ffs. There literally is no excuse not to. It wouldn't cost any time whatsoever, perhaps an extra two minutes on top of each game with the whistle stopped. They've started with goalline technology, now go one further and get video replays in ffs.

Wouldnt even take that long, just look at the amount of time goes by when all the players surround the ref or a player fakes injury, all it would take is some fella in the stands to watch one or two replays a few seconds tops, and let the ref know.

Works generally well in Rugby League, even with the odd mistake. But it will depend what they are going to look at as it could be a long list. Take Lukaku's disallowed goal last night, it looked like the West Ham player just fell over. If it just gets confined to offside's or penalties then that could be a start.

Would still leave referees open to cheat as they currently are doing. Needs to be for everything. Referees need to be accountable for their mistakes. They can literally relegate a club by giving one poor decision.

It wouldn't take up alot of time??!!! Why do you say that? If reruns could only be requested by the refs, we'd find that they'd be covering their backsides all the time by asking for another look. It happens now in cricket where the batsman is quite clearly run out but the umpires still ask for confirmation. If the ref has to walk to a screen somewhere and look at it do you give him a limited time to make his consideration? How many angles would have to be shown -- all of them? Only 2 extra minutes you reckon. I'd suggest you could put a nought on the end of that for some games. If disputed incidents are instead to be decided by a fifth official somewhere then why should he get incidents like last night, with the Lukaku disallowed header, any more right than the ref? It's a matter of subjective opinion in many cases, certainly where there is body contact. At least now you can take your anger out on someone you can see!

The only circumstances that should be considered for more technology are offsides. Live TV coverage already has the technology where a line across the pitch shows who was the last man. Something like that could be run continuously, in real time, to someone sat somewhere close to the pitch and he could be wired up to relay to the ref whether someone has been stood offside. The ref wouldn't even have to stop play and request it gets looked at; he'd be advised automatically, and very quickly.

that liverpool game where they got 2 pens for handball and one of them hit the guy in the face just shows the standard of referees, we need video replays, i like the idea that the manager of each team gets 2 calls like in tennis and if they are wrong they lose a call if they are right the decision is over turned and they still have 2 calls

Something very similar happened for us, at Goodison, it might have been an opening day to a season, we were playing Charlton, ref blew a pen against Chris Powell who clearly headed the ball although he was on the deck (trying to prevent a corner IIRC) Arteta slotted the penalty. We went 2-0 up, and won 2-1. Our first goal was no crap pen though.

In rugby, the ref has the option to go to the video ref. The on pitch ref does not do it themselves (like in American Football). I don't see a problem with the ref checking on 'in the box' decisions, for example, if they are not 100% on the course of action or their vision was blocked.

Fouls and such like are still open for debate even with replays but it gets another pair of eyes on the situation and different angles to make a more informed decision.

I think we ought to replay the game.

Penalty decisions can be subject to interpretation by different people, even 2 referees. What cannot be in dispute is that the fourth official has to have known within seconds what went on with Coleman and Cisse, yet we have to wait post game for a decision to be made. Pathetic.

i'm hardly surprised, mike riley is known as possibly the most incompetant ref of all time - he was clueless, did anybody think standards would improve when he took over?

Hackett highlighted our game against City, yes, but did you see which incidents he talked about? "The tackle that resulted in Sergio Aguero going off injured" and a "non-penalty decision". Seriously? What about the assault on Eto'o by Mangala? That was the most obviously wrong decision (just a yellow card) of them all. Don't remember Hackett being that good a ref himself anyway.
