Keith (couldn't) Hackett on Christmas Refereeing

It is true though. We tend to take the referees as run of the mill but they have been poor and they need a massive reality check to get them performing at the top level again. It seems like they must be getting paid more so they can take it easier than before.

Then there is always the bias that creeps into decisions.....city game for example

He picked out the City game, as well as the Routledge red card. If he was all for the benefit of the game he'd be pushing for a video panel, at least one for retrospective punishments (diving, spitting, violence, all that good stuff).

Rugby League makes video decisions work, theres more players on the field and the video guy still makes the calls quick enough. Add to that the discipline and respect around League refs and suddenly we could up the standards throughout the PL.

He's bang right, officals like Mariner, Mason and Friend need shunting, they're being paid nearly £100k a year to continually produce incompetent performances, it wouldn't be tolerated in any other walk of life and Mike Riley is like the invisible man.

The way referees favour top four teams, i often wonder if they are instructed to keep the league interesting, being that everybody within the premier league go on about it being the most competitive, fascinating league in the world. Imagine little old Everton winning it with their inferior world wide fan base and little spending power, compared to the Premier League Juggernaughts rampaging throughout the world such as United and Liverpool. In order to keep these huge TV deals alive they need as much exposure as they can get with the help of the top four teams.

Look at Serie A for example.....

It would help if the threshold for what constitutes a foul stopped being lowered. Players now know that tackling is frowned upon, even correct tackles that are carried out a bit too strong. They also know they are now entitled to cheat by going down under the slightest of touches. Is it any wonder reffing is becoming more and more difficult?

Last night was a great example of the refereeing standards in modern football.

West Ham player on the floor = Foul
Naismith gets exactly the same contact as Eto'o or Lukaku gave but it is not a foul?

Consistency and fairness is a thing of the past at the moment. If the ref decides early on that a certain amount of contact is a foul (rightly or wrongly) then he has to give fouls consistently throughout the game for both sides.

The game has been corrupted by poor officiating. And poor officiating is allowed because those running the game want to protect Manu, LFC, Chelsea, Arsenal and now Man City and 'brand' premier league. Referees do not look at the incident and judge it for what it is but as influenced by the club or the manager. Newcastle's Cisse was banned for an elbow as was Swansea's Shelvey due to retrospective action. But Cahill can kick lumps out of Kane and stamp on him but doesn't get banned. How can a referee not see that the ball hit the Leicester player on the face, at Anfield, but somehow thinks it hit his hand? Likewise, how can a FIFA liner, Mallarky, not draw the refs attention to Sterling who put a hand in the face of a Swansea player, when he was a foot away.

And as of today Mike Jones or Riley have not apologised to Leicester for such a poor decision but Mourinho gets an apology for booking Fabregas for a dive and not giving a penalty. Steve Bruce has not received an apology from Chris Foy for not booking Cahill for a dive that would have seen him sent off. never mind the two footed challenge on a Hull player that should have been a straight red and not just his first booking.

Hackett has opened a can of worms and the football establishment are out in force 'protecting' Riley and referees. Talksport couldn't wait to launch an attack on Hackett. But they have been remarkably silent on Leicester's face ball penalty against the RS, Cahill diving, Cahill's wellying Kane and stamping on him and Sterling's attempted punch.

The football media know which sid etheir bread is buttered on and make a good living out of protecting the premier 'brand'. Which includes covering up when decisions go in favour of Manu, LFC, Arsenal, Chelsea and now City. Retrospective action will only be highlighted if the football media want it to. And what was Pearson thinking of, in his post match interview, for not going ballistic about the poor officiating by Jones. Incredible. But if a fan has a go at him, about how he is managing the team, he goes ape sh*t. He, like our own Martinez, needs to highlight constantly the appalling decisions by referees.

Why did Marriner give an appalling penalty decision? Was it anything to do with Chelsea getting beat at Newcastle? So that the title race would be 'wide open if City beat Everton' and the 'brand of being 'the best league in the world' would be able to be promoted by Sky to get bums on sofas and in pubs.

What did Scudamore say about Manu doing badly?

"Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore admits that Manchester United’s struggles this season have damaged the global appeal of the competition.

Considered one of the world’s biggest sporting brands, United have a huge fan-base outside the UK, and their slump since Sir Alex Ferguson was replaced by David Moyes has already affected commercial success.

Speaking during a promotional visit to Johannesburg, Scudamore told Bloomberg: ‘It’s a double-edged sword. When your most popular club isn’t doing as well, that costs you interest and audience in some places.

'There’s lots of fans around the world who wish Manchester United were winning it again,’ he added. ‘But you have to balance that off against putting on a competition.’

The Premier League are reported to earn around £2.23 billion from the sales of all their overseas rights to live games for the three-year period, 2013 to 2016, with Asia contributing the major share of £941m".

You don't need money in brown paper bags to have corruption and corrupt officiating going on. But people who know which side their bread is buttered on.

To have every referee and linesperson and 4th official all onside at the same time to conjure results for the benefit of the FA selling the tv rights abroad?

Sometimes a thicko twunt is just a thicko twunt. When the thicko twunts stop being hired to be referee's there'll be a change, sadly the thicko twunts at the FA do the hiring and they only know and hire their own....

Make them accountable by having to do interviews after the game and asked why they give or don't give certain situations.

As soon as a camera or a room of journalists are questioning their weak decisions week in week out we'll see the standards rise and a more balanced and neutrally officiated game.

Make them hug gay communist orphans before and after the game live on camera so they understand what the real people are going through.

Then dance on the spot like a touristic Russian bear if they give more than four yellows in a game and your team doesn't win.

I like that idea, but you'll find very few sports around the world where officials have to account for their decisions. Certainly not here in North America, where limited coaches' appeals for replay reviews are about the only way to reverse a bad call.

that liverpool game where they got 2 pens for handball and one of them hit the guy in the face just shows the standard of referees, we need video replays, i like the idea that the manager of each team gets 2 calls like in tennis and if they are wrong they lose a call if they are right the decision is over turned and they still have 2 calls
