Keep the faith, but Moyes needs to earn his money

Now there has been time to reflect on the Sunderland game, I thought I'd offer a few thoughts (ramble?) about where we stand at the moment.

First off, I firmly believe we are very close to breaking through this 'wall' we seem to be facing at the moment. By this, I mean that final killer ball, taking that chance, and getting the vital goal at the vital time. Step back for a minute and try to see our performance without the blue-tinted glasses on and you will actually see a good, footballing side (mixed with direct play, of course) who continue to play well. It has once again been an incredibly frustrating start to the season - I was ripping my hair out as much as anyone with the Beckford miss - but I think it's important we don't overstate our problems at the moment.

On the plus side, as I say, I have faith the results will come, but Moyes has to earn his money. He needs to start looking at things objectively and not shoehorning Saha into the starting XI and actually appreciate Yakubu's form before he decided Louis was the man to go to. Has something gone on behind the scenes to warrant such a selection policy? Perhaps. Even so, though, the Yak has to be given a chance to continue the promise he was showing culminating in that excellent winner against Stoke.

DM's inflexibility is also a recurring problem. As many have said, the decision to wait until the 82nd minute to throw (inevitably) Yak and Becks on was, let's just say, hugely irritating. As BBC, I believe, eloquently put it, "In the first half, Saha did his best to distance himself from proceedings", which was a pretty accurate analysis of the Frenchman's performance, if you can call it that.

The other big question, for me, is how do we accommodate Fellaini and Rodwell? I am a big fan of both and the simple answer is, I don't know how we can keep both happy. Although Arteta has without doubt been poor recently by his standards, I can't help feel a big part of this is not having someone of the Fellaini ilk beside him, sitting deep and breaking play up, so MA can influence things a bit further up the field. There is dropping deep, then there is dropping to CB to get the ball. This needs to change - we need our best player (overall, he is) to be in the best position to cause maximum damage, and that is centrally, driving the team forward with his quality. It should also come as no surprise that the man to lose out from Felli/Rod's introduction into the team has to be Heitinga. Underperforming is one thing but there is a clear impression from the man he doesn't want to be here, accentuated by his nigh-on "come and get me" pleas to the likes of Bayern. Bye bye, son.

So, with these 2 key swaps: Yak for Saha, and Fellaini/Rodwell for Heitinga, I think Moyes can help the team immensely. Where does this leave the team as a whole? Well, as I say, I think it's important we don't exaggerate our limitations - I've tried not to go into massive detail about them because they've been discussed and will continue to be debated in the other threads - and to try to focus on the positives. We are a good team and as, I think chico said (?), IMO we are only a goal or 2 away from taking that leap from playing well and poor results, to getting both the performances and the results we need, to clamber our way up the table.

I think we can still finish in the top 7, personally. I don't think that's in any way, shape or form an unrealistic hope. Does it mean we can ignore this start to the season? No, but we're not as bad a side as many on here would have you believe.

Keep the faith. COYB.

I think we've seen plenty of nice little triangles played in a part of the pitch that cant hurt the opposition. Lots of possession that means sweet FA. Someone (Rodwell?) has to get on the ball and force the issue from midfield. Fellaini can do that but he's usually given a DM role when he plays and that leaves too much to do for one player. We really only have, consistently, Baines taking the game to the opposition. Even Coleman has now resorted to a conservative approach - 9/10 he's looking at Heitinga/Neville for a sideways/backward pass.

I'd like to see a midfield triangle of Felli as the sweeper, with Arteta and Rodwell more advanced. That could be one potential way to accommodate all 3, whilst giving Arteta a more advanced role, because he's been playing too far back recently, even for a deep lying playmaker.

I lost faith in Moyes a long time ago as people on here know...I am fully behind the Everton cause but find it continually hard with Moyes at the helm..I am sick of people going on about how he has done wonders with this shoestring budget etc etc...In truth the man has spent millions and some of those millions have been a waste...

I think other teams are stepping upto the plate now cos they are playing nice attacking football..I speak of Bolton under Coyle...Sunderland & Blackpool...Although i don't expect Blackpool to be anywhere near the top 7...You mentioned Beckfords miss...I said in another post that it was the lads 3 rd touch of the game and it was no wonder he missed it...World class players only take minutes to change games..and moyes needs to realise that if he is gonna change personal, that it needs to be around the 65 minute mark..we don't have world class players so they need time to get into the game...He has too much faith in the likes of pienaar..arteta & saha..

Moyes does need to start earning his money , u r right and one way is to start is to give the bench players a game and putting some of this first team in their place..Most of them know they will start every game, so they are getting away with woeful displays..

The first post totally avoids the problems with our leaky defence.
Neville offers us nothing, baines defensivly is lacking, jagielka is the worst of the lot so far and distin while improving on a poor 1st season remains a liability.

I said I hadn't discussed our weaknesses in great detail because of the fact they're being discussed in nearly every other thread. What my point is, is let's get some perspective here: the way people are talking, you'd think we were a bunch of no hopers. We're a good side who are desperately close to getting the results to match our performances.

people were saying we were close to turning this around weeks ago..I'm sick of being close..I want results and moyes needs to start earning his money in many areas like u said..i agree with ur comments.

We've got one of the best defences in the league, mate. Nev's been solid, Baines has been good -- only ever exposed when Pienaar drifts off and doesn't track back (something which not enough people have picked up on), Jags -- one or two errors aside -- has saved our hides on numerous occasions, and Distin's been one of the best defenders in the league.

I've seen your posts about Distin before -- no matter how good he plays, you call him Dustbin and say he's crap, but to actually think the defence is a big problem is misguided. Howard's made some bad errors, and they've cost us points, but only because we can't seem to hit the back of the net.

Played - 14
Goals conceded - 15 (3rd best in the league)
Goals scored - 16 (7th worst in the league)

The main problem's evident; a lack of goals.

Indeed it's been hugely frustrating, I've been in disbelief as to how we haven't got more points from the likes of Villa away, Sunderland away, Blackpool away, Bolton at home just to name 4. But, to me, the best option at the moment is to put our trust in the manager and the players for what is a massive game on Saturday, and get 100% behind them. Yes we have problems but let's try and keep our heads and hopefully the players can start getting the results their performances, on the whole, have deserved.

Yeah spot on matey...Defense is not the issue..I think out of our strikers only Yak and Beckford have scored and they have been on the bench past 2 games..go figure....Cahill in IMO is not a striker but thank god for his goals...

I disagree.

In our last 2 games alone, the Arsenal performance was shameful and a good load of players were embarrassing against Sunderland.

And having one plan, one tactic, and being predictable does not merit all 3 points. Time and time again teams have sat back, defended our incredibly slow and methodical approach with ease, and then countered, to claim 1-3 points. We deserve to be 14th.

I only hope we beat West Brom...cos If we don't , we could be in for a very long depressing season...

Exactly...This 4-5-1 slow approach is starting to show it's age...

Ok, so much for you were leaving if we didn't lose the last game and the next two, but would you be happy if we won the FA Cup this season? Would you rather see us win the FA Cup and finish say 10th? Or finish about 6th?

How can I leave , when I love all you guys so much...:-p......I would take FA Cup and 10th..we would be in Europe..but at the moment we have no consistency so putting a run together in the cup is unlikely but not unheard of, so your point is a good and a vaild one...
