A non-league player has been sacked by his club for trying to punch a fan - 19 years to the day after Eric Cantona's famous kung-fu kick on a supporter.Goole captain Karl Colley, a former Newcastle United trainee, was sent off for a tackle in their Northern Premier League First Division South game with Coalville Town.
He then reacted angrily to chanting from away fans and aimed a punch at one after initially being held back by staff, including Goole assistant Curtis Woodhouse, the professional boxer and ex-Premier League footballer.
The East Yorkshire club sacked the 30-year-old defender immediately after the match, which they lost 3-0.
The Football Association has said it will look into the incident.

I'm gutted for him, he's a nice kid but you can't go off like that, he knows that. I don't condone or make excuses for today, it was wrong on many levels

Goole assistant Curtis Woodhouse
A Coalville fan told BBC 606: "The Goole captain has just gone ballistic. He got sent off, it was a bad tackle. I think he knew he was going to be sent off. There was a melee with the players.
"He threw the captain's armband on the floor. Coalville fans started singing at him - nothing malicious in what they were singing. He threw open the black gate and ran up and tried to hit one of our fans. Luckily the punch missed.
"The Goole officials, fair play, are trying to stop him."
Woodhouse said on Twitter: "I'm gutted for him, he's a nice kid but you can't go off like that, he knows that. I don't condone or make excuses for today, it was wrong on many levels."
Goole, managed by former Birmingham defender David Holdsworth, sit 14th in the division - four below the Football League.
A club statement read: "After the deplorable incident at today's home game against Coalville Town, we can confirm that the player responsible has been released by the club.
"The club acted quickly and decisively and released the player with immediate effect and as such the player in question will never play for our football club again."
In 1995, Manchester United's Cantona lashed out at a Crystal Palace fan after being sent off, claiming the supporter shouted racial insults and threw a missile at him. He was banned from football for nine months and fined £20,000.

To be honest, for the stick he gets, if Leon Osman leapt into the crowd and started cracking a few skulls, I don't think many would blame him.

He hasn't the strength to strike a football let alone crack a skull

When he does catch one right though, it's a thing of beauty to watch (e.g. Larissa a few years ago).

You're right tho. If he jumped into the Lower Gwladys - there's what, 6,000 in there? Simple probability dictates he'd cause at least one fracture.

Not many though.

Instead, he wanders over to our fans at every away game and gives his match shirt to a little lad. Saw him do it Saturday, the lad was over the moon, stuck it straight on and was beaming. Sometimes being critics on here makes us forget the human element, and what playing for the club is about, so it was nice for me to see that. coyb!!

Sadly it seems that some fans need a whipping boy each season. With Neville gone and Hibbo barely playing, Osman appears to be it.

Funny how no one gives a monkeys when Jonny does that stuff, but when its loveable local lad ossie, his little fan club think he should not be a whipping boy and has given his all for the club. He's not a whipping boy, he is the worst performer in the team, who gets started time and time again, fails to perform, covers less ground than any other midfielder, and gets paid very well to do so. He is rightly getting the frustration right now, its a results business, and an internet forum or down the boozer is the right is 100 percent the right place to air your frustration s over football. Theres a reason neville, hibbert and Osman get more stick than others, they are worse than others, and weve endured this axis of terrible football for a decade and are desperate to move away from such limited footballers. So I couldnt give one for your holier than thou nonsense
