The thing is, absolutely no one was saying that pop music was the cutting edge music.

People who dismiss all pop music as disposable dross are missing the point. Pop music is disposable, it's supposed to be. It's there to make you dance until your brain figures out the hook and you get bored and move onto the next one.

It doesn't mean it isn't, at times, amazing. If you can't get a kick out of Uptown Top Ranking, Shake It Off, Groove is in the Heart and the like and realise that liking that dooesn't mean you have to throw away all your Theolonious Monk records then you are dead inside.

Also, all those Northern Soul records... utterly disposable juke-box fillers. Doesn't mean there aren't some amazing songs in there.

Yea I listen to a lot of music such as drone, techno, noise, electronic and stuff. It does my head in sometimes and I even get annoyed with myself.

I listen to some to some c-86, some normal easier rock or some pop just to stop me going insane. Plus 'pop' music these days is more diverse than it's been in years. I don't want to listen to a 10min drone track if I'm walking to get some milk.

See, I just don't really 'get' most electronic music... But I don't go around telling people who do that they're idiots and only I know The Truth.

Likewise, what's the point of telling kids that everything was better in your day? If it really was, they'll find their way to their own version of it soon enough. And if they don't, what the hell do you care?

A lot of my collection is very dated, but I recognize that's a consequence of growing old and that kids these days probably get the same stuff I get out of, for example, Hank Williams from somebody else. Not better, not worse, just different.

The stuff about volume and that feckin' "millennial whoop" is true, but the opening premise of the video is wrong and it doesn't really improve from there.

As soon as it mentioned "Sgt Pepper's" my eyes rolled to the back of my head.

thats as far as I got and just came to the conclusion it was some little bellend repeating the dross his mum and dad have fed him about modern music.

He looks the type who will ask you what you are listening to if you sat next to him on the train.

The only black person he will listen to is Miles Davis with the only album being Kind of Blue.

Absolutely worth its own thread this part of the discussion ;)

Totally agree with you.

While I don’t enjoy the majority of what’s in the charts these days, I also realise that I’m 36 years old and that I am not the demographic that the music is aiming for.

I look back on some on the stuff I listened to when I was younger and cringe  and some of it still sounds great.

It’s never in the history of mankind, been easier to not just listen to any type of music you want, but easier and more affordable for bands to record it.
That means the market is saturated with a lot of sub par music, but a lot genuinely talented artists have the means of getting their music heard.

There’s plenty of great music out there if you have the patience to look :)
