never in a month of Sundays.......sorry

I wish I got payed that much for being **** at my job.

But I was talking to one of the lads who sits by me at the match and he said he bumped into a ref(forget which one) an he asked him how much he gets payed and he said £50,000. So maybe.

a assistant ref is on £300 per game, im ****ed if id take that amount of stick for that, get more money off the dhss sitting on your arse with a few kids

Referees get a basic wage as well as being paid for each match they referee or assist, so while assistant refs only get £500 per match they're also on a basic wage of £33k or so.

Far to much if you ask me!!!!

You really think £60k a year or so is far too much considering all the stick they put up with every single week often more than once ?

How would you feel walking around a football pitch getting abuse from tens of thousands of fans and having players get in your face every time you blow the whistle ?

How would you like being criticised in the press for every wrong decision you make ? Waking up in the morning to read that at breakfast time. Your kids would probably get stick from other kids at school too.

Sure, in the grand scheme of things there are people doing harder jobs for less, but i wouldn't say it's far too much, especially when some of the fairies running around the pitch with them are getting the same salary per week as he'd get per year.

I'm surprised they don't get more too tbh. The level of scrutiny at the top level with all the different camera angles etc. means that they have so much pressure on them nowadays.

Lots of respect for all referees at all levels. Some of the abuse they get at even Sunday League level is shocking (I'm no saint either like, I've been sent off for abusing a ref for a bad call when I was young and stupid...)

to me what sticks out immediately is how much less english refs are paid than the other top leagues

this is problematic for a couple reasons. first, it doesn't attract the most skilled people. people with the observational skills and faculties to ref a game well may not be drawn to that line of work early on because their long term earnings prospects aren't that good. Second, if they feel their salaries aren't sufficient, they'll be more likely to supplement it with bribes or other wrongdoing.

maybe it wouldn't work out for refs, but conventional economics would predict that if the rage for refs in england were to be raised, more refs would compete for the job, which would make it easier for the FA to punish/fire the awful ones, thus increasing the overall quality of refs.

but thats the point, they have to be on a good screw to remove them (in the main) from the realms of corruption.

makes perfect sense. however my one point of reference is Singapore where junior MP's are paid >1m a year (> GBP 500,000) the logic being for the very same reason yet in reality this just gives them more scope (and financial clout) to 'develop their own interests'.

I suggest that referees would have to be paid far more than suggested above to not be persuaded by the Gobblelar /the Malaysian Bookies and their ilk.

pay does not directly link to performance in the uk when someone is paid enough to enter the higher tax rate.
thats my companys policy, which is why they focus on extras such as company cars, bupa, gym membership, extra leave instead of big pay prises.

and it works.
the point im making, 60k or 100k, they should perform to the same level, aka their best.
