I’m hoping someone can advise..

Does anyone know what the steps are that are deemed to be ‘reasonable steps in looking for work’ in order to claim JSA?

Also, does anyone know if you have savings over the 16k mark and plough them into mortgage, does that render your claim to JSA redundant?

I have mortgage cover and a new term and condition is in it; basically in order to put a claim in, you need to be in receipt of JSA. Looking at Gov site, in order to get JSA, you need to run through hoops..

Just wondering what those hoops are..

Have you tried the Citizens Advice mate ?

I`m not sure if you can get a face to face meeting with all the shiz going on, but they would be able to help, as they have volunteers there who specialise in this sort of stuff.

Or, a lot of areas have community run things in the likes of the Sure Start centres, who could help.

I worked on JSA a few years back. I’ll have a response for you later on today mate when I’ve finished work.

It was about five years ago and things constantly change in that department so my knowledge might be a bit dated but I should be able to help.

Are you sure you’re not in a UC area though? I’m surprised people would still be claiming JSA as I expected everywhere to be UC by now.

Crikey. Quite a lot going on here. Regarding the £16,000. They would look into that as possible disposal of capital. Be up to an individual at DWP to decide. Can’t say how that would go but I wouldn’t be surprised if they knocked you back. However, I'm guessing you’re applying for contribution based JSA otherwise it would likely be UC you’re applying for so savings would be disregarded for 6 months.
Without knowing all the ins and outs of your circs it’s difficult to say to be honest. I’d definitely call Citizens Advice and get a full telephone appointment to discuss further And get a full benefits check.

It's in melt down I have just applied for my OAP they have cut the telephone hours down - you on an age, but they are very helpful in all departments - if it's a basic starter on JSA you will be directed there to the right person plus advised accordingly -
I got mine sorted out, they tell you to go online forget that as I did and heard nothing speak to an advisor & get the information you need....
Then any hiccups telephone your local Council Benefits advisory services they are better than the CAB officers who work from home etc who will act on your behalf etc

I'm luckily in employment and don't think that will change.
Just I don't want to pay for mortgage protection cover if I have to jump through hoops to actually claim on it should I need to.
Also I'd have a relatively handsome pay out if I got made redundant over 16k which I read is a threshold of savings.

I live in Lytham, not sure if UC area or not..? How would I know?

Getting JSA is such a ballache, mate. Last time I was unemployed for a fair bit of time it took me a while to accept I had to go on it, basically once you get through the online application you get an appointment at your local jobby and then you begin weekly meetings with your "job coach", you have to keep a diary of every job you apply for essentially. They have their own version of indeed but it's crap, just link all the jobs you apply for on indeed, totaljobs, reed etc on there.

It takes a good 2/3 weeks to get going, but after that it literally becomes just a weekly 20 min box checking session were you meet with your coach and you basically just confirm you are actually looking for work once a week.

Dunno about savings cutoffs or mortgages, 2 things I certainly didn't have at the time :D

But yeah that was just my experience in terms of actually going through the JSA procedure.

If your 16 grand has been spent I think you will be OK - if you have paid it off your mortgage its gone don't tell them - old saying don't declare money that you have spent wisely, it has gone.....

If you pay a full stamp and were fully employed you would get job seekers no matter how much you have in the bank, I'm personally self employed and wouldn't get it but I almost certain you would.

Think it depends how pedantic the adviser is. @Charro will be able to give better detail
