Jonny Wilkinson retires

before the injuries his tackling was insane for a man his size, his kicking seemed to fade a bit with it, but in his pomp the perfect fly half for that england team, a relentless group of forwards racking up penos, and greenwood organising alongside him

He could only be loved in England, a country where we seem to rate the tackling ability of our #10 above their creativity and try scoring ability. I'm not sure he ever really justified the hype, and imo the real stars of the WC winning side were the back row who so often secured quick ball, and Will Greenwood, who provided the creativity in midfield for the likes of Robinson and Cohen to thrive.

Having said all of that, he does appear to be the ultimate professional and rung every inch out of the talent he had, and for that he will hopefully prove a role model to many.

Rugby's version of David Beckham, except he won a world cup.

NZers don't rate him at all, a bit laughable, but they have been blessed with First 5's.

Won more than Jonah Lomu ever did.

I mean dull as hell to watch but he won so many games on his own.

Was a compliment like, comparing him to Beckham. Workrate, team before himself, fantastic boot, good looks etc.

I think he was brilliant in his own way, would have been better for England if they had an attacking, side stepping genius like Carter or Cooper at 10 so he could play at 13 which better suited his game I think.

speaking to a rugby fan today, said that his kicking stats dropped a little when he could no longer tackle like a beast due to the injuries, makes you think about the mental side of being a fly halve

Kicking's all about confidence isn't it. If he was lacking confidence in his ability as a player it'd be natural to assume it'd filter through to that. Dunno about you, but I've never found kicking penalties hard, probably cos I'm a footballer, but I reckon I'd kick 80-90% out on the field mucking about. Never played a game though, I'd imagine I would toe poke every one!

I've always been sound taking penalties in football, but then my priority when playing is me looking good and enjoying myself rather than the team winning. Plus I hate taking a back seat and watching, I'd much rather have the responsibilty and chance to influence events, I think thats why I hate flying so much

Haha me too!

I meant penalties in rugby though. Growing up as a teenager in NZ I had to quickly learn how to throw an egg shaped ball around, lunch breaks etc. We'd have kicking comps and I'd kick better than the school's first XV kicker, but when it came to doing anything other than throwing a hospital pass I was hopeless, weak and slow, especially against the Maori and Island lads. If only they had NFL kicker-like subs, TOUCHDOWN!

He reminded me a bit of Neil Jenkins. Deadly with the boot, but very unlikely to threaten the try line. It's a shame that the media will make more of a fuss about his retirement than they did someone like Richard Hill, who really did deserve a place on the pantheon.
