One of the UK's greatest racers (motorcycle and f1) has died today at the age of 83. This guy was truly amazing yet always seemed to come across as a quite shy and understated man.......r.i.p......

I think you'd be justified in calling him the greatest. No-one else managed to do what he did, and almost certainly no-one ever will.

Shame :( read loads of stories and saw a docu piece on Sky Sports with him a while back. Seemed a top guy and racing clearly ran through his veins. RIP.

A legend and a true racer. To be honest he was better with the bikes than with cars, his F1 title came due to reliability issues to the great Jim Clark and bad luck that struck Graham Hill.

However that shouldn't take away from what he achieved, he was the best in the world on a motorcycle and he could give the best drivers a run for their money. As others have mentioned no one else will win a championship on both 2 and 4 wheels and therefore he has a legitimate claim to be motorsports greatest ever sportsman.

RIP John Surtees

Damn, saw that this morning. Quite the achievements made during his life. Probably will never be equaled.

Only man to win the Formula 1 and 500cc world championships. A true legend. RIP

Edit. Retired from racing motorbikes at 26 by which time he'd won 7 world championships.
Plus a hat-trick of senior TTs'. Incredible record. A brave man who used his talent to the full. RIP

should have been knighted.

the danger he faced will not be seen by the lucky ones these days

sad indightment of honours system
