Joel Robles article

Wouldn't say it was harsh. Some of it justified but he's ok for a supposedly for a 'second choice keeper'

Basically we need a goalkeeper who is a mind reader.

Not at all.

It's basics.

I'm not - and that article isn't - blaming Robles for every goal he concedes (which as the article correctly points out hasn't been loads).

But all you have to do is watch the last few goals we have conceded and arguably Robles should have done better for nearly every one.

Exhibit A - Mane in the derby. Defence at fault for letting Mane run through them, but Robles was all over the place.

Exhibit B - Origi in the derby. Same as above.

Exhibit C - United. Now this isn't to pin it on Robles as Williams made a rash, panic-influenced reaction and we paid for it. However, Robles wasn't getting there. He was totally flat footed and badly positioned. He also nearly always jumps off his line way too early from pens, making the oppo's mind up for them.

Exhibit D - Leicester. Albrighton's goal, he was all over the shop. Ridiculous for any keeper to get beaten from there. He was also pretty useless for Slimani's goal but would've been harsh to say he was at fault.

Exhibit E - Burnley. Dreadful for their goal. Defending in front of him was poor but the danger was gone yet he actually ran out and put himself in a position where he could only dive in. Stupid. He'd also been caught out of position earlier on when Barkley headed Keane's effort off the line. Watch it and beforehand Robles is so preoccupied trying to shove the Burnley guy near him he loses where he is.

He was also dreadful vs Spurs. But every player has a bad game now and then and it happens.

The examples above are basics though. Basic errors and things that can be rectified by simply having some composure in those situations - which he seems to lack and has lacked in the time he's been here.

He's actually a good shot-stopper and makes some excellent saves - especially when he's one-on-one.

But he doesn't really instil any confidence into the side and his lapses in concentration come too often for where we want to be heading.

He's a step in the right direction from the Howard of 2014-2016, and actually I think he's done better than most of us would have expected in the four years he has been here, but that's enough time to tell he ain't good enough.

Down with all this common sense posting lark.
We won't stand for it
I tell you it's just not right

A decent article with things he can improve on. There isn't a player in the game that can't improve, so hopefully Patrick Lodewijks can work with him on the training ground and earn his corn as a coach. Hopefully these things are being pointed out to him and the team are working with Robles to improve them.

Who is "former keeper David Preece" and why is so much weight being given to his opinion on here?

I have never heard of him.

Comes to that, why do we need a different thread for it?

Why is this article not in the designated Joel thread?

Don't think there's much weight given to it Khal, it's just a noteworthy article regarding a player who some think we should keep as No.1, and others don't. Juts a discussion point.

Probably should be in the other thread like but that's up to the @mods

I'm sure they are and have been Bruce.

Thing is, if by 26/27, you haven't got the basics right, then I just don't feel confident that he'll ever be at a level where we can be confident with him in nets heading into the big games.

We've seen it against the big sides already this year.

One mistake and we're punished and the game is all-but over.
