Maybe my memory is going, but can anyone remember what happened to Joe Royle when he was manager?

He came in when we were bottom of the league, but kept us up and won the FA Cup. He pulled off a real coup when we signed Kanchelskis that summer, who helped us have a great season in 95-96, just missing out on Europe on the last day.

I seem to remember we signed Barmby early the following season, and were being touted as outsiders for the title in November/December.

That's where it all goes murky for me. Because our form went out the window after this, and Royle got sacked/resigned (I can't remember?) in about March, due to us languishing just above the relegation zone. I vividly remember him being unhappy because the board wouldn't let him buy Tore Andre Flo (who later did well at Chelsea), and this had something to do with his departure.

I recall Dave Watson taking over as caretaker manager, and we just about stayed up. The clincher was when we beat Spurs 1-0 at home with a few games left, but I don't know why we ended up in that position after a good start to the season.

What happened to our form, and why did it dip so sharply?

Just looked, we finished 15th, but only 2 points above the relegation zone. Royle left with 7 games to go, and we only got 6 points out of 21 under Watson (3 draws, 1 win)

Because he couldn't sign tore Andre flo. When the chairman basically is telling you, you can't sign a player who you want, the writing is on the wall.

He started looking stressed and indecisive in interviews. Probably getting death threats and abusive messages from kopites due to kicking fk out of them in derbies

Beat derby away and we're sitting 4th and a few points behind top end of November. Sunderland came to town the next Saturday and we got tonked 3-1 or 4-1 I think. Worse than that, Hinchcliffe absolutely smashed into the street end hoardings and was taken off, think he was injured for a while. It all went tits up from there from what I remember. Buzzing when we beat Derby as well, was either Parkinson or Barmby who scored an 84th minute winner, Barmby I think.

I remember our form, results and performances spiralling badly downwards for ages before that, though.

I just can't recall why

Johnson did a lot of prodding - it was more a "Mutual Consent" thing than a straight-up resignation and the Flo thing wasn't as big a spanner as many think, although it was a catalyst no doubt. The last time JR spoke to Johnson as an EFC employee he had actually no intention of resigning.

Injuries and a downturn in Andrei's form caused the plight mainly. AK eventually went to Fiorentina and we had nobody to inject pace and our play became predictable and laboured. Barry Horne's departure to Birmingham also caused disruption as he was like our Gravesen/McCarthy and held things together.

It was Flo plus another midfielder from the same team plus he was trying to bring Barry Horne back who he had flogged to Birmingham if my memory serves me right

A defender called Claus Eftevaag. Also Norwegian.

Got Myhre instead though a year later - possibly the most underrated goalie we ever had.

What a debacle, and what a shameful way to treat one of our own, who had just won us the FA Cup.

Set us back years, imo.

Nope I was wrong regarding Sunderland. We had played them already and then beat Derby 2 games later so it wasn't the Sunderland game as I thought that was the catalyst. Bloody hell I smoked far too much weed in them days. Boxing day onwards look at this for a set of shocking results

That's a shocking turnaround, from being outside contenders for the title (which I remember even at the time that we weren't, by the way)
