Joe Royle

Talking of havoc.Your post made me think of the 8-0 Soton game Royle hat-trick and David Johnson 4 (another player, although a lousy Kopite we let go too soon)...then I remembered Peter Scott and looked him up,hard to believe he played 50 games for us.

Joe Royle scored the four, Johnson the 3. I went to that...bloody sleet, snow and everything on the lower left Gwladys our spot. Someone took a cup o tea on for Westy as he was freezing with nowt to do. I ended up full of cold the next week and was off school...made up with the result and the outcome ! I think Peter Scott was a Kirkby lad...a journeyman type player but always gave his best for us.

Saw Joe Royle make his debut for Everton against Blackpool at Bloomfield Road...but there was only one player on the pitch worth watching that day...!!
Joe was however to benefit in the next few years with having the said player on Our Side .... i give you Alan Ball...

Little did I know when I was at that Southampton match as mentioned earlier #16 and when the best goal of the game was Bally's single, that was to be his last ever goal for us before HC sold him to Arsenal. God bless him.

Never saw him play for us but I do remember his immediate effect on the team when he arrived as manager. Took a team that were surely on their way to relegation and gave them belief and look what they achieved. Absolute legend.

He was only 24/25 when he left and went on to play very well for city and others, should have kept him IMHO,imagine him and big bob wreaking havoc together!!!
He had a back problem, Bingham rarely played the Latch , and Joe together, as you say he did great at city, they could have been great duo for us upfront as they were two different types of strikers - Joe was my hero - The latch grew on me , but a lazier player than Joe!

.....recall him really suffering with back trouble, Dario. Not sure if that was part of the reason he was allowed to leave but as you say, he was useful elsewhere.

That's what I remember. Had a serious back injury regarding a slipped disc of some kind. Wasn't able to play too often and lost mobility over a couple of seasons. His goals started drying up and we thought that was the end of Big Joe...........it wasn't and he went on to continue goalscoring. Remember him scoring a goal for Norwich at Goodison to warm applause when they beat us 2-0 I think.

He was the type of player who stayed back for extra training, in his early career he got some stick I can tell you!

He was raw hardworking, but he soon learnt the business - Bally stated he pushed him hard to give him the belief of the skill he had - he never stopped hassling the keepers, the defenders, he became our pen taker too - mostly thumped high into the top corner - I was at Wolves once it their big Spion Kop away end - he smashed a pen so high we thought he had ballooned it over the bar - on MOTD it went in just under the right angle of the top corner of the net!
A great wing half who became centre forward - Sir Matt Busby was after him as a youngster, but fortunately he decided to sign for us - my hero!

Correct! Way too many bottles of red consumed between then and now.
