Joe-Max Moore was a decent, hard working, if unspectacular player in a up and down period. He came in on a free transfer, from, I think, New England Revolution, and scored a fair few goals early on, as others have already said, and a few decent ones as well I might add. One volley in particular, away at Leeds, was fantastic, and generally he put himself about and tried hard for the team.
People are right in saying the goals dried up after a while, but in fairness to him, he ended up playing all over, and the mid to latter part of his time here he mostly played as a make shift Right Midfielder, and maybe even a few times in the centre. He was a tireless runner and fairly neat on the ball, so he adapted well but it was clear it wasn't his position. He just did whatever job he was asked and got on with it.
I was about 15 at the time, and i always liked him, but as is the case with a lot of players in the Walter Smith err, he unfairly gets thrown in the huge pile of players who were all "[Poor language removed]" by a lot of overly dismissive fans. I put it down to a general dislike of Walter Smith, who for me gets a lot more stick than is justified, and a hangover from a lot of the fans who only 10-12 years earlier had watched us win the league. To put that into perspective, Walter Smith and Joe Max Moore came about closer to the 87 title team than Martinez is now to Rooney playing for us. But i digress.
Final point on Joe, he was, I think, USAs all time top scorer for a while, not sure if he still is, and i think I remember reading his Dad owned a team in the US which Duncan Mckenzie played for in the 70s or early 80s.
Could be wrong with that like, my memory's not what it was...
I blame years of psychological damage from watching Everton.
