Any one been who can offer any tasters? Working out there for a week or so and keen on a few pointers,

cheers in advance

Difficult to offer tasters without knowing what your taste is, mate. But there are a lot better places to see than Sandton City, unless you are a bird who is mad about shopping in expensive boutiques.

Yes its true, you will find many poverty-stricken townships. Lots of tours offered to visit them. Also some uptight obnoxious middle-classers of any colour being rude to waiters, service can very from world-class to i'd-rather-go-into-the-kitchen-and-fetch-it-myself sh!te. Massive gap between rich and poor, so crime is a factor, but using a bit of common sense you are very unlikely to be a victim. The good news is that you are unlikely to get carjacked as a tourist, unless of course you bring your own car and its a luxury 4X4 or high performance German sedan. Which are everywhere.

Attractions: Game reserves with big 5 and lion parks are quite accessible. Highly recommend the Elephant Sanctuary at Hartbeespoort - interacting with rehabbed elephants, pretty cool. Some great museums and sights esp of the liberation struggle vs apartheid if history is your thing. There is an open-top hop-on-hop-off bus tour which is apparently world-class and on my list of things to do sometime. Lots of casinos, bars and nightclubs. Loads of restaurants including great steakhouses where you can get a decent 500g steak for less than 10 quid. The bad news is that if you want warm beer/mushy peas you will have to warm it/mush them yourself.

Been to Gilroys Brewery today....interesting place, good ale and decent food...and absolute cheap as chips. Between four of us we had two 3/4 bottles of Sauvignon Blanc, 18 pints of proper ale, 5 mixed starter dishes and a main course each for R967...which is around £47......incredible value

You just nailed the best brews in Joburg, imo. Great spot. Bit of a shlep to get out there (technically not Joburg anymore) but none better.

If you like craft beers you can also try the Foundry in Parktown North. A lot more accessible than Gilroys, but more expensive. Not that you'll notice with your GBPs. Loads of local SA ales, plus they stock Mitchell's which do a nice bitter.

For steak, single malts and cubans there is the Grillhouse in Rosebank.

Enjoy the rest of the trip!

Flying back tonight....thoroughly enjoyed it.....enough to convince me to set up a JV out here. Was sceptical at first not knowing what to expect but everyone I've met has been so positive and helpful. Found a great partner in the right line of business so I'll definitely get the opportunity to see some more interesting places than J'burg. Right time to be doing business here, too.

If you get the chance to visit don't be put off by the stories you hear....no worse than most places I've been to around the world.
