Job Searching

For someone who used to work in Jobcentre Plus, it's ironic that I'm completely useless at finding jobs.

I'm actually employed at the moment but looking for something new, but I have no idea how to go about it. I look at Linkedin etc. but I find myself randomly browsing Directgov and such but nothing pops out at me.

How do you go about your job searching? If possible be as specific as possible as in all likelihood I'm going to copy you

Find a company you want to work for - approach them and their competitors directly.

Wouldn't bother with the likes of Directgov. Useless.

I also copied my cv to tailor specific jobs, don't pepper spray it.

Also,nit you live near an industrial estate. City centre ignore the above, do a cover letter for speculative positions, and offer to do some work for free if need be,separate yourself from the rest, you may not have to work for free, but offering will certainly highlight your desire and motivation.

Be very careful how you phrase that though - and don't lead with it.

Depends what sort of work you're looking for / got the skills to do, but, though it's a bullsh***y American kind of thing to do it might help to :-

Sit down, take out a pen ( yes, a pen, it helps to write these things down ! ) and write down a list of 10 things ( or 5 if you're struggling ) you want from your new job.

Compare that to what you're doing now.

Take it from there.

To be fair, I never worked on the job search line, but you're right, they have the job finding expertise of your average wet flannel in JCP.

Good tips there. The problem I have is that my current job is too easy (I'm not being arrogant saying that, it's just that I literally do nothing all day and it annoys me no end as there's no opportunity to impress and progress). Plus the subject matter of the job irritates me (which is something I should have thought of before applying I guess!)

Easier said than done It's a hindrance that I chose to study Law when I have no interest in Law ^^

Therefore, it's difficult to apply for positions doing what you want to do when you have absolutely no track record of doing it!

Negative thinking is my forte though

opt out then, lots of people qualify to do something and then hate the rest of their lives. Get out there and pursue other interests and 'things you've always wished you could do/ places you want to got to' as I say, you may not end up rich but you will be contented.

I worked for a recruitment agency for a week, just before completing my induction I got offered a better job so had to go in and say, errr sorry I'm offski.

The one thing I learned is. First Contact at a recruitment agency is your first Interview. If you want them to put their rep on the line by introducing you to their customers..

Go In Prepared, dress smart, treat it like an interview.

Other than that, good CV, Pretend you're advertising yourself on the CV and in the interview, Promote yourself, you've probably got skills you didn't think you had. Worked in a shop as a kid?, Customer facing experience...Worked on a project at school?, Good team player, good at working in groups
