Job references

Yeah found out today that it's the HR department who do the references and they have a standard company-wide template - so think I'm thankfully in the clear!

Was a vindictive, self-absorbed woman she was though. It was her way or the highway. Not the greatest first experience of full-time employment, but i'll certainly learn from this one. Thanks all for the advice.

Happens to everyone at some stage mate, you move on to better things and they don't. You'll be above them relatively speaking in career terms 18 months into a decent company

Was funny when I handed my notice in to my former employer. My contracts manager said something along the lines of they've invested a lot in me and it's disappointing to see me leave. I said it was disppointing that my job description and my actual duties are worlds apart and I didn't go to university for 4 years to be a secretary or a handyman (no disrespect to anyone who is). They just looked at me all confused.

This doesn't help you really but it's a story hahahahaha.

Haha pretty much similar to where I was at. What the job description and market was like was nothing at all similar to what I was doing. Line managers don't seem to take too kindly either, when others have an opinion about where the job is going.

Off your high horses. But yeah, the more I hear form everyone, the more I'm cool with it all as it will serve as a learning curve.

now we've established that they can't give you a bad reverence I think it's obl6 right that you roundhouse kick that bird in the throat and take a crap in her mouth

Or just make her a jarg adult work account and get her mobile on there.

Had similar mate, H.R subtly tried to railroad me into being honest about my thoughts on him in my exit interview while telling me all references went nowhere near him and were processed by H.R. with basic role info.

I rose above any parting shorts, but transpires a mass exodus followed me out over the following weeks/months so they were already alerted to him and his "personality". If you haven't left yet, keep your nose clean, not your battle anymore.

References have to be accurate and truthful. So it's not entirely true that you can't get a bad reference. For example, if you were disciplined at your last job for misconduct, they could mention it on your reference as long as it was properly investigated at the time. As long as it's not misleading, they aren't doing anything wrong by giving you a bad reference.

However as said previously, a lot of employers are scared of providing a bad reference because anything considered to be not 100% accurate could be grounds for legal action, so they stick to basic facts - how long were you employed for, what your attendance was like etc rather than give a character reference. if you do think a misleading and untrue reference has adversely affected your job prospects then you do have grounds for legal action. I think it's called negligent misstatement.
